Hi All
I'm new here,by result of my research re: 2 - new ALTEC 414-8C speakers.sn 01921 & 01971. I would like your opinions on enclosure types and drawings which will suit this model speaker. The free air resonance is 30Hz. The types which interest me most are:
Transmission line. Onken. Reflex. Extended LF reproduction is important.

Since Fs is considerably higher than any published or measured specs I'm aware of, what's the rest of the specs?

Altec designs were all bass reflex with that driver that I am aware of so look at the 9849 designs for one example of cab volume if you go that route. As an alternative to that, Baby Onken used a 414 driver and woudl be a fun wood working project. Plans are available on the net.
Anyway you stack it though, that driver does not do what I would call extended LF. It makes an awesome midbass driver though. My 9849-8D's like to cross over to a sub at about 60hz. Low bass is MIA.
Trust me, it can, but it takes a large cab and a matching impedance amp.

I'm thinking about the same question, but what I'm thinking is how would a pair of these sound in a set of EV Aristocrat cornerhorns? I have a pair of Aristo's that have been begging for a new driver load instead of their EV SP12Bs. I'll have to measure them out, but I was thinking 12" woofer and possibly a 811/511 horn with appropriate CD. It may even be possible to stuff a set of 15" drivers in them, but I'm not convinced.
Anyone care to comment?

And of course the rear view....
All the old EVs I'm familiar with are high Qts to keep efficiency high 'on the cheap', so a low Qts driver such as the 414 would need lots of EQ, preferably by using a high output impedance amp with variable DF bass tone control up to ~20 ohms to dial it in for most tonally balanced in-room response. Unfortunately, this much EQ tends to make them sound 'boomy'/'loose'.
Only one way to know for sure though.
