Hello, just joined hostboard. Been shooting super 8 for a while, been processing B & W for last 2 or 3 years. master to DV or DVD now. Mostly use canon cameras, also muck about with 16mm bolex's. Curious on other peoples solutions for xfers, processing etc. Since being in a small country on the other side of the world its nice to know there is a large and busy super 8 community out there. Si
I have home processed super-8 to negative and reversed on the computer. I have just used over the counter developers and fixers.
The main reason has been curiosity and checking out old cameras. It is easy to swap around the super-8 cartridge.
Biggest problem I found was loading super-8 into the Lomo tank spirals. Eventually I made a fixture which unwinds up to two at once, super 8 cartridges, onto 8 mm spools. I then find the film can be fed onto the spirals easier from these spools.
The last time I tried this everything was inside a big changing bag on the dining room table. Got a bit warm , but two films were unwound from their cartridges, loaded into the tank and then, out of the bag, processed.

i spoke with another super8 buff in nz awhile ago, he was asking for a b&w processor in australia, as there was not one in nz, was this wrong?
i use film plus, punt road in melbourne, very helpful people to go to.
alas there is no super 8 processing in NZ , which is why I started doing my own after getting frustrated with waiting for the kodachrome, up to six weeks.
Also the first pro telecine with a S 8 gate has just arrived in wellington. There is film plus in Oz, I had a couple of dubious encounters, but i know of other people who have found them quite good.
For transfers I use a sony pencil cam mounted on a projector, which shoots the film in the gate, the bulb is on a dimmer and extension tubes with c mount a lens gets me a nice full screen image.
About to start playing with processing ektachrome.

I was thinking of returning to nz either to wellington or auckland. i must say, wellington was my favorite city, very arty.
how has your home processing gone? is it cheaper? and how is the quality?
can you also tell me the price average of cameras, and the price of films where you get them?
just in case i do head that way....

There are second hand cameras around at some photoshops, but it might be easier to go a shopping on the internet if you want something special. Cameras do turn up but you have to keep looking to find good ones. There seems to be more canon super 8's about.
814's, 512's and the odd 1014E.
Some camera shops also sell super 8 stock either kodachrome 40(process paid) or TriX about $30 to $35 NZ.
I buy mine through Kodak direct for about $10 less.
For processing the Kodachrome its off to switzerland and the Tri X to Oz.
My Tri X results are nice and scratchy, with that hands on bucket bash feel. I am getting consistent results and liking the look N feel.

Sorry to gatecrash this topic, I want to make a post on this board but after searching the page for about 5 minutes I can't seem to be able to find the link that will allow me to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
it's odd that you send off to swizerland for processing, i am pretty sure i send to sydney?!
Theres collection points around the world, but the processing of prepaid kodachrome is done in Switzerland.
