Altec Lansing A7 Voice of the Theater/Pair | eBay
Interesting driver/horn/crossover combination. Anyone have any comments as to how these cabs work/sound with the horn mounted in the woofer port?
Here's a nice pair!

What years did the 515 woofers just say "Lansing"?
Those are A5sQuote:

That's an A7-500W Magnificent without the walnut veneer, mounting style. IMHO, too much space between woofer & driver/horn. In addition bass response doesn't sound as defined down low like that, without plenty of EQ.
(I have a pair). (Of Magnificents, I mean). :)
The XO point is too high also, they need to be 500 Hz, same as the Magnificent. 1200 Hz is for high power PA and the speakers will be far enough away from the crowd for the large acoustic center distance between drivers isn't a problem, so a poor choice for HIFI/HT to my ears.
Here's the proper way to orient these cabs in 'smaller' rooms: http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...ome/page02.jpg

I was wondering why they had a 1200 hz crossover with 500 hz (511b) horns. Thought it was unusual--does seem like a "mismatch" of sorts now that you mention it. Maybe the previous owner used them for P.A. as you alluded to -- that would explain the distance between the woofer and horn and the 1200 hz crossover with the 511b's.....Quote:

Those are exactly what I bought new in 1977. They were called A7X. I have the original documentation. Just as they came from Altec.
Those A5's are cool! Would love to hear them.

Altec diaphragms blew like popcorn in live apps. I'd bet I sold several hundred replacements. They survived a bit better at 1200.
The Large formats were much better for live than the smalls, but Altec wouldn't sell them to music dealers. JBL had no such qualms, guess which is still in business?
Altec wanted to protect it's contractors.
Indeed, replacing diaphragms was I got involved with numerous local 'garage' or similar bands that never made it AFAIK, though instead of upping the XO point, I just added auto brake light bulb limiters as they tended to play too loud to be enjoyable. Even though it wasn't my intention, it did seem that way to some since they then wanted me to build them more speakers or modify what they had.
