Waste of time and money ????
I noticed a pair of 409-8D's for sale on ebay. The demo u-tube clip sounded nice. Would it be worth while to build small enclosures for these?? vented or sealed? I realize these were designed as ceiling speakers but thought I would check with the pro's on the idea. Thanks.
Re: Waste of time and money ????
How much money? At 20 bucks each, fine, at 75 each no way. They make nice surround speakers for HT.
My druthers? 405's or 803 with a better tweet. The (I suspect) CTS tweet in that unit is OK at best.

Anything that says Altec on it brings money in Japan.:D
Re: Waste of time and money ????
See if this guy will ship, maybe offer to buy them all. Seems to have original boxes..? If so shipping is more palatable
(if interested in this flavor of 409 that is)

Re: Waste of time and money ????
Anyone know if I could use these ST's without the transformer and basically have just an 8ohm 409-8E ??
Re: Waste of time and money ????
Correct, the tx is just an add-on.

Bit of a 2 k hump

Attenuating the tweet would help but might be a task.
Re: Waste of time and money ????
The older ones I've used had the tweeter wired separately, so was able to just add a L-pad and if the HF roll off is too much, then one can wire a bypass cap around it to 'taste'.

Re: Waste of time and money ????
I sent the guy a message--he is out of town right now and will check out shipping costs on his return. Would an equalizer tame the 2K hump Old Guy mentioned above??? What about ordering four 409's and using two in each inclosure--any improvement in that configuration??? Thanks for all the info guys--I really can't obtain "real" Altecs (severe WAF problem) so I thought this might be a way to tiptoe into the Altec world.
