New member - Some Altec gear to share

I have slowly graduated to the world of efficient speakers via the acquisition of some vintage JBL and Altec speakers. I have had a 602b Duplex in a 606 enclosure for about 6 months, and ultimately planned to match it. In the process I came across a 606 second enclosure with no driver/crossover. Research and input from others put me on the path of seeking out a 604b, which I just acquired along with its N-1000-B crossover. I am really no closer to my goal of a pair of duplexes in proper matching enclosures, and now need to find the mate. The 604b came in a University enclosure, which while attractive, is clearly too low and too small to properly present the 604b. My immediate thought was to unload the 602b and start the process of finding the 604b mate. Problem is that the 604 and 602 sounded good enough together that I feel compelled to keep the 602 until I find the 604b mate, and even then to maybe keep the 602b and stuff it in the University enclosure and utilize it in a mono setup. Most folks more knowledgeable in Altec than me have pointed out the challenges of the 602b, but I wonder if it might shine in a slightly smaller enclosure under lower power, like a tube driven mono setup.

Sort of ranting, introducing myself and looking for advice/opinions all at once! Thanks in advance...

Welcome Slial!!! If I were you I would find another 604B and build cabinets that are optimal for those drivers. I have 604 g's they can really suprise you with the right recording. Good luck lots of good people and good info here...

Or you could do two 604's and use the 602 as a center channel....

Hmmm. Now there's an idea that I hadn't thought of. A nice 8-10 ft listening distance and 3 Duplexes showering music on me. Still wondering if the slightly undersized University enclosure is big enough to present a 15" Duplex. It certainly sounds too small now with the 604b, but perhaps a center channel scenario would suit it better.

Unfortunately, I am long gone. This is just the latest audio addiction that includes Mcintosh gear, tubes and tube gear, clean VINYL and lots if it. I just seem to love it all

Just build cabs into each end of the couch so their like a big pair of headphones.

I'm in the same boat. McIntosh,Altecs and Vinyl ! It doesn't get any better than that for me.... Now did you say you have 2 606 cabs ? If so I would use them for the 604B's and then use the other cab or find a more suitable cab for the 602.But if your really adventurous you could also build some Stonehenge or 620 cabs.They are both 9 cubic ft.And will provide a little more bass extension.
