did I miss much? 9844a ?'s
So yesterday 3 9844a's show up on my local craigslist for 200.00. It's at a church sale, and they are starting the sale at 5:00. So a get there 2 hours early and I am 3 in line, and I ask the people in front of me, what they are interested in, neither say anything about speakers, so I think I probably will get them. I ask one of the attendents if he could show me the speakers, he say's sure, but I sold them already... I was looking for a basement system, and was wondering how these speakers stack up in the Altec line up?

I happily spent a grand for 4, then drove 5 hours one way to get them in AB's backyard. Of course gas was still under 2 bucks, and i was a tad more inclined to do long drives then.
Outside of the 806A's caveats, they are really fine sounding speakers when properly placed. Polar response of the tandem 414's is very close to that of the 811 where it counts, and the tandem 414's also have a dynamic attack that a single 416 cannot pull off without loading it in a horn. They are less sensitive than the 15 inch 2-ways by a margin so don't expect flea power to blow you away.
I eventually parted them selling the components at fair, below ebay prices, kept a beautiful pair of anodized 811's and came out far enough ahead to not regret parting them.

Thanks for the info Bowtie427.... and you and AB are funny!!!! more dynamic than 416's and, in that little box, that is something.....I like Attack, when Altecs crack their whip... Thanks, I missed something then, just need to hear a pair now.....
Re: did I miss much? 9844a ?'s
These are excellent speakers, used as monitors in world class studios, such as atlantic records in thier days.....I also had three pairs in my own studio I built. They are simply awesome and mixes translate very very well. I later put a pair of Urie monitors in the control room. Fankly I liked the altecs better for mixing. They come in a utility speaker gray color, so I took one pair of the altecs and brought it down to natural wood and put them in the house. I still have not found a more natural and open speaker system period. That takes in over 40 years of professional work which means I've seen and heard alot! Enjoy them. Placement is critical, power is not, they are very efficient so 20 watts will push them fine. I used mine with a pair of McIntosh 240 tube amps, each wired for mono, so 80 watts per channel. Enjoy!

We're still running a pair religiously at our theater at the community college where I work. They love them.
