Where do these fit into the Altec timeline, and product lineup? I don't recall hearing of this model before.

Early 80's, the lone alnico in a sea of new ferrite drivers. I have also seen "LFE" versions. I think they are essentially a "high power" version of the 515B, but don't quote me on that.
EDIT: now i see the LFE was likely a ferrite replacement for the LF version.

Interesting! When I saw it on GPA's site, I thought it was strictly a custom to meet the needs of today's high power requirements. Mercy! One of these has almost as much dynamic headroom as two 515Bs and in a much smaller net Vb to boot!

I've got a couple of oddballs as well.

BY the serial numbers this one's number 19 in the run....
Interestingly, the GPA 515 LF is rear vented.
Yes that is an early G HP.
Later ones had screws in the magnet to hold it to the frame.
What's odd is that it's not described in the 515 G literature of the time. I did talk to Bill H about it at one time, and I could actually see him shrug his shoulders over the phone and say it was available at the time. I guess it was a special order item, maybe wired up as a pair in series to give an 8 ohm load.
Actually it was. Or rather the 16G at least. I suspect it was mostly used in 2x15 cabs in parallel. Higher powered solid state amps probably need 4 such woofs. The 16GHP was readily available. I MAY have a sheet in one of my myriad of boxes.
I remember having sheets wit T/S specs for the GHP in both impedances.

That's the literature I was referencing. I don't see specific mention of the 16G HP driver. Am I missing something?
No. I THINK the 16 came after the sheet was printed...but again, it wasn't special order it was readily available. Literature took a LOT more effort and time then. I'm sure I have lit for it. Finding it might be not fast.
Bear in mind this was before Bill worked at Altec. I was a dealer by then.
I suspect though 10 or more 8 ohm units were sold for every 16. You had to have a need for 16's.
