OT subs with Altecs?'s

I have the chance to buy some cabinets or just a cabinet, that were designed for dual TC sounds LMS ULTRA 5400 18" drivers. The cabinets are 44"/22"/21.75". they are made out of void free BB with heavy bracing in a sealed design. The net after bracing is around 9 cubic ft. and the baffle and top and bottom plates are 1.5". This is the design, and I am wondering if it is a good idea, or if there are better options for subs with Altecs? I just want some of the presence that certain recordings or music halls create and the feeling of space that a big sub can bring.. I would describe what I am looking for is, when a large ensemble comes in, I can still hear a tympani clearly and coming from the back of the room, or hear a pipe organ like I have heard before. Thanks any help or direction would be great!!! I would be using these with M19's or 604 8g's.....

I would almost think...no, I would think, that setting up a room for bass like that would be even more important than the speaker cabinets or drivers. Just because your speakers will be able to reproduce extended bass, doesn't mean you will be able to hear it (and have it sound good) in a normal sized living room that's not extensively treated with bass traps, absorption panels etc.

I think you need to set up the box you're sitting in before the box you speakers as in.

Maybe he has done that?
The bigger issue to me is do you run the 19's full range and just add the subs in?
Or do you build a 2 way crossover that limits the 19's and uses subs only below say 60hz or freq of your choosing?

I did the former and use the Altec 18" 8184 subs. (There, now the topic is not OT)
Anyway, what I still need to do is add an adjustable phase unit for the subs because I do get some cancellation at the crossover.

I can say that the subs are really awesome for just what Juniper describes.

I use sealed box subwoofers for my Model 19 setups. I let the 19's run full range, and bring in the subs at 40 hz, 24 db/oct linkwitz-riley. I tune the sub box to get a Q of 0.5 to 0.6 or use a linkwitz riley transform to get there. Works really well.
