I opened a virus up last night on my PC and wanted to remind y'all to be alert. Here are some sites for dealing with this shit...

BTW There's a new one going around. (Fizzer something or other.) The one I downloaded was an older one.
Wouldn't the most ironic thing to be catching a virus on your computer by opening up a virus catcher site...?

Virus warnings are almost as bad as the viruses themselves. We got an email from a manager the other day saying that he got a virus which installed a bad dll file on his computer and that it was sent out to everyone on his addressbook, and he blindly forwarded the message to everyone he knew asking them to delete the file.
We checked, and the dll file was legitimate, and the email itself was a hoax. Some people are just so dumb, they'll forward on anything they receive. I'm so tired of receiving virus warnings from people. They are usually just junk mail, and most people never confirm the problem before they push send.

I've gotten those same emails. Which is why I generally check the web sites to see if any new ones are going around. You can also find out about the email hoaxes that you mention.
I made the mistake of downloading what I thought was a screensaver program from Kazaa and became suspicious after trying to run it. I cleaned my computer, but felt it appropriate to remind people not to make the same mistake I made.
Yeah, it's embarassing to admit my lapse in judgement, but figured you guys wouldn't make fun of me...too much. :)

I deserve the ridicule. I should know better, right? That's what I get for sharing files over the net, right? The pain in the ass is that the virus scans I ran didn't pick up one of the bugs. Being the paranoid geek that I am, I was looking at net traffic through a firewall and became suspicious about certain activity. Sure enough, there's another fucking program the virus scans missed. o_O

JaceSan, I consider myself fairly savvy when it comes to stuff like that too, but I have been caught off guard as well. I HATE it when that happens! [img]smile.gif[/img]
Like you, I also check the web sites you listed above. They can be a great resource when you aren't sure. Just be happy that you were able to take care of it without too much damage.
