timing belt??

Anyway, I was driving home lastnight and the yellow check light came on, my car already was giving me problems. I Would drive the car and it would putt in lower rpms. When i was coming home all of a sudden it just gave and i tried accelterating but the car wouldn't make any noise. I tried starting it and it sounded like it was trying to start but the engine would not engage :-( Could this be the alternator???

If you check engine light came on, there should be a code stored in the ECU...I think all you need to do is turn the key to "on", and then count the flashes (ECU is under the carpet on passenger side)...then look it up in the code list..which I can't find the link to http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/mad.gif, I am sure someone has it...that will help isolate the problem.
I don't think it is the alternator..usually if the alternator is bad, the battery will die and the car won't turn over once you have killed the battery.
As for the "timing belt?" subject, if your timing belt is hosed/broken, the car could be really screwed up..how many miles on the car and any idea when the timing belt was last changed? Sometimes a borken timing belt will do things like bend valves and stuff..which is pretty major repair $$ - I would then recommend a swap http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
if the timing belt breaks, the valves stop moving, and the pistons don't, and the pistons come up the cylinder and whack the valves and bend them..... You'd probably know if you had major issues like this.
