this is from last year, one of the only things i wrote for creative writing class (instead of turning in something i'd already written--i know, i'm a terrible student sometimes), but i still really like it. this is one of the few pomes i've written that i have absolutely no idea where it came from. well except for the blue shirt. the rest of it, i mean.

blue

blue is the shirt
the shirt that you wore
like you wore your smile

in that restaurant
resting your hand
your hand on my knee
my need for you

almost too evident
evidence of my attachment
attached to the bill

with the fortune cookies

and my sex
sex being the reason
the reasoning behind blue
the blue of that shirt
that shirt that i love
more than my love

for you

in the dark and listening
to the scuttle of mice feet
across dirty wooden floors.

i left out the back door,
cutting through the kitchen
so i wouldn't have to face your face
one last time, but instead

i found you standing at the stove,
burning all of the letters
i ever wrote you.

but i particularly like "like clockwork you walk." really like the puppet metaphor. would you mind terribly if i reprinted that one on the works & days site as a preludium to some future chapter?
