i lie flat on the cold floor
of my apartment, fingers
splayed, ear pressed
against the smooth wood,
listening
to the sound
of you
playing piano. in my
head, i see
your alabaster fingers
as they press down
lightly on the
ivory keys, as they
trip over the
ebony keys, as
they pour forth
music?
music that slips
out of the top
of that old upright
your mother bought for you
back when your
daddy still lived
below me, too, and she could
afford it.
you are playing
Chopin tonight, and the
sound of his voice
filters moodily through
my floor,
your ceiling, comes
ringing up the pipes
that join us, that
bridge the gap
between us. i know that
if i spoke to you,
and if i mentioned that
i listen to you,
night after night,
prone
and taut
and hardly
daring to breathe on
the floor of my
apartment, with
the lights out, you
would turn your eyes
to the worn floor in front
of your doorway, just
past my feet, you would
murmur something under
your breath like you always
do when you shuffle
past me on the
stairs, you would
always be thinking
of my ear
resting on the
floor, your
ceiling, and you
wouldn't play so
well any
more.
