Ok i have an idea. what if i used Altecs for a theater?
i've always wanted to see Starwars and hear it the way i first did.
So, there's this church sanctuary that's not being used. it measures 60L x45W x35H (vaulted roof)
i have 2 828s with 515 8gs, 2 816 VIs w 515 8ghps, 2 mr5124s with 299 8As, 2 511s w902s. this should cover front and rear. i don't have a center channel or type of sub picked out yet.
i plan on using a 7.1 blueray player as a 5.1 and a combination of electronic crossovers.
this is a start i can flesh this out tomorrow. pics of the room, maybe some tenative diagrams.
for now i'm starting with a 16'x 9' silver screen.
top gun, master and commander, disney and looneytoon cartoons are also on the table. :) we even have a popcorn machine.

Sounds great, what are you going to use for a pre/pro and amps or receiver?

This looks familiar, didn't we already have this discussion?

there used to be a cool balcolny. in the back,, :/
i was thinking of putting the 816s with the 902s just under where the balcolny used to be.

Cool project!
I think I'd definitely start with the 828's at screen level with wings. I worked in a large theater when I was a kid and the VOTT's were positioned across the back of the screen in a row, spread maybe to a length of 30'. It's been awhile but that is the best from my recollection. These three enclosures fed a full old-style movie house (Mann theater Mpls, MN). The theater sat about 600, IIRC, with a full balcony seating area.
IOW, a big ass movie theater. My claim to fame with this emporium is that I sat through 210 showings of "The Sound of Music".

My advice would be to stick with getting a 2 channel system properly set up in that space first. Then, maybe take it up to 2.1 for more contemporary flicks.
I'm wanting badly to sell these, very soon, and cheap, before i have to tear them apart.

It would be a shame to destroy them. Alas, I'd have to move out some old iron to have a space. (54 Chrysler no engine/transmission)
Re: Ok i have an idea. what if i used Altecs for a theater?
Long story short, it will be some time before i am able to relocate to a place where they would even be remotely practical. While i may re-establish a large basement listening area again at this residence, any system going in there needs to be fully portable and able to pass through a 27 inch wide doorway. Sadly, the 210's have become albatross' that i have invested too much physical space in on top of the cost of getting them here. Somebody, give those dogs a home!
Re: Ok i have an idea. what if i used Altecs for a theater?
bowtie,
I am in a similiar situation. I have 2 817 cabs, and no practical use for them. I highly doubt my area has a market for them. But I am gonna try and put them on craig's for cheap, and see if they go. I need to make space in my garage, again!
It seems like I go through periods of "thinning the herd", to having a good deal that I can't refuse just jump in my lap. I try to resist at times, but these altecs always get the best of me!

With a relatively minor amount of reworking, these are ~90% of a pair of 820 corner cab's elaborate woodworking...........

Bummer as these chopped up to be corner loaded compression horns can be used in even modest size rooms...........
