this has been discussed before...
widescreen and ultrawide employs the same technique except that widescreen is really only concerned about the expansion of horizontal field of view, thus increasing the ration between the width (16) and height (9) of the projected frame. Ultrawide lenses and adaptors maintains the frame size by increasing the field of view of both horizontal and vertical. Basicly any lens can can be ultrawide as long then can pull back far enough, usually under 12mm is considered the wide while 6 and under is considered ultrawide.
So if your lens is at 6mm and you have a widescreen adaptor - you are in ultrawide shot with a widescreen aspect ratio.
Nizo III is ultrawide lens and not a widescreen lens. Remember the widescreen lenses changes your actual frame size ratio (aspect ratio).
16:9 is a video thing, meaning it was designed by video people. Film has different aspect ratios. What does this mean? Can you shoot 16:9 with film? Of course you can as long as you can find the lens/adaptor. In video 16:9 is achieved in 3 ways.
1. using a 16:9 CCD - equivalent to having each film frame as being already 16:9.
2. internal circuitry crops the the top and bottom of the incoming image and resize/squeeze inorder to fit the regular 4:3 video image frame (reduced resolution).
3. lens and adaptors (optex and century optics)
Obviously you can only employ number 3 for super 8 film. Both adaptors is about $700-800 USD. Plus you have to make sure your lens have the proper thread size to make it work. If it is too small you either buy an adaptor or create a bracket to hold it place. If it is too big, then dont bother- the vignetting[sic?] (seeing the out rim of the lens on you frame) is too much. There is already.

Sorry to bother you with things already gone through! I'll read as far back as I can later..
Is the 'cropping' option you describe a possible way to go? I'm sure there are ways to interfere with the transfer video capture process so the image is cropped? A different shaped projector gate for instance.
This is probably considered a waste of the film frame, but have you ever heard of this being done?

cropping is actually done very often in 35mm production.
It could be done with Super8 - theoretically.
If you are projecting you need somebody (Roger aka Moviestuff from this forum?) to devise something for you.
Is this a waste of resolution? My opinion says yes since Super 8 needs every single image clarity it can muster. However, it can be fun and liberating.
If you are only gonna show your final piece in video- crop away. It is actually pretty is to crop with any editing sopftware.
If you lens is small enough - you might be able to find a anamorphic lens in Ebay to fit it. YOu will need to create a brakcet for it thtough. YOu can also find anamorphic projector lens in ebay.
There is a lot of things needed to be considered when you go widescreen with Super 8. Tell me your camera, budget and post production and distribution/viewing plans. MAybe I and other members can map out a reasonable solution.

A quick question for those who know,
I am confused about the difference between ultrawide and 16:9. I would like to shoot widescreeen on my beaulieu, is it posible to use the nizo ultrawide III attachment to get widescreen? Are there any cost effective solutions if the nizo attachment does not do this?
Thanks

Two quick points:
You can crop after you have your footage in the computer easily in softawre.
I have the Nizo Ultrawide III, (for my Nizo 6080).
Do not assume it will work with every camera, just because it can screw in.
It works great on my Nizo, but would not work AT ALL on my Bauer715XL-S. (with the Angeniuex 6-90 lens)
However, it DOES work on my Canon Scoopic 16mm camera.
Weird, huh?
So try to find someone who will let you put one on and look through it.
On my Bauer, it was vinyetting from hell. I could see the lens big time in the 4 corners of the image.
Also, be really careful with these, as they are plastic and not glass (even weirder, eh?)
