Heyyup. In case theirs anyone in hear that actually understands how to actually go about making films and related stuff, rather than gobing off about the latest pile of ollywood excrement....
If I want to film some action, and have it appear in isolation to everything else - ie a fight sequence, with the backround all black. ( like they were under a spot light or 2 in a blacked out room ) how would I do it.
No I dont want blue screen/green screen, and outside dont work.
- should I be using a studio of sorts - and what would be the cheapest option. ?
im thinking of two boxers going at it, in their own world, and interlacing ot with long shots of the crowd watching on.
( when your'e actually fighting - you dont have time to listen or pay attention to the crowd )
ho hum.

why not film it in a studio then with a black background?
Or hire a theatre for the day. Use the stage and lights already there, and film it in there.
With some carefull lighting you could make it look like a sort of dreamworld

If you want to film against a black background, then as eddie said sensitive lighting is your ticket. The theatre is a good idea, as you want the boxers as far from the backdrop as poss.
Don't have your light directed at the backdrop, instead angle the light, up and downwards and also try rear projection .
Smaller boxing halls tend to be well smokey which would help soften the backdrop.

We achieved something similar to what you're talking about in terms of isolating a character. The trick is done with lighting. We used an insanely powerful light to illuminate the subjects. In our case, we used an overhead light, and a reflective card. The light highlights the character, and the bounce card removes the shadows under the jaw and eyes. Tweak the exposure on the camera until the characters/subjects no longer look washed out. At this point the background will have disappeared. They did this a lot in some of the Rocky movies.
