Magnolia

Out of interest, how many of you guys liked or hated Magnolia?

I have met people who walked out of the cinema half way through and other people who rate it as the best film ever made.
I personally thought it was great but was listening to the radio a couple of weeks ago and had to listen to a DJ slag it off for about 5 minutes, followed by a letter sent in to the station doing the same thing.

I can see why some films may be critisised unfairly but not when as many people think it is brilliant.

It had moments of pure genius.

But they were all buried inside 3 hours of Pretentious bullshit.

But then again this is a sore point for me. I paid 20 pounds for the dvd that had no extras what so ever. Then went to the same shop the next day and they had the 2 disk set for the same price. Bastard!

Anyway I like Paul Thomas Anderson. I loved Boogie Nights, and I liked the film he made before that. The one set in the casinos. But with Magnolia I just thought it was a little to far up its own arse. Anyway Im sounding like a critic and I fucking hate critics. So Im gonna stop here.

I loved the film (I have it on DVD with extras). I thought it to be some kind of urban epic I like the idea of the multiple interconnecting protagonists all though its nothing really new (ever seen shorts? Very similar even has it's own frog type sequence).

For three hours Mr Anderson does push the "general" audience but I like you have heard some people call it a travesty to film!!?? Maybe some people can't concentrate for 3 hours and thus can only
see fit to disregard the film. I guess it's one of those love it or hate its.

The soundtrack mostly provided by Amiee Mann is also fabulous and was the source of inspiration to Anderson for many of the characters and their stories in the film.

I've just seen Magnolia a few weeks ago and i've seen it three times so far. i absolutely love it!!!!! i'm no film critic so there's not much i can say about it other than that i wish more films could be like this.
does anyone here like Traffic or Memento?

After a promising start Magnolia plunged into
boring me ridig - the first film Ive ever seen that I thought was a waste of time - and I would have left halfway through but a freind told me the frog shower was a good scene, so I waited for that, saw it and figured I may as well see the next 10 minutes.
It did nothing that Short Cuts didnt do a hundred times better, and wasnt really very special or 'synchronous' or 'paranormal' or unusual, or anything.
Shame because Boogie Nights was amazing.

Oh and Traffic and Memento are great. But I cant see why you are mentioning these in the same breath as Magnolia.
