Ok. This is nothing related to the WTC and if it offends anyone please say so.
However, I've been working on a disaster movie for sometime and perhaps some of you would like to come forward and help me out a little. Down at Anarchy Pictures we're always striving on original ideas and we think we've hit one.
The film, with no title yet, we've dubbed it "Slowing Down" is all about the times before, during and after the world stops rotating.
You can imagine what would happen. We're moving at 50,000mph or something, if we stopped rotating, kabang, we'd fly. Buildings would crumble and fly, everything, except maybe planes. Perhaps they'd reach the speed of light? Weird, but thats not the point.
So, my questions. If the earth did stop, surely there would be no gravity, right? And surely everything would fly and crumple and be destroyed, right?
What would happen to the sea?
Any other comments? I'll get back to you with more questions after I get some replies. IF anyone wants to help with this project, let me know on this thread.

Ermmmmm,
Last time I checked, gravity is produced by huge amounts of mass and not rotation. Therefore apart from huge ecological changes, not that much would happen. The moon doesn't rotate, but that doesn't bugger off anywhere. We're clamped in by the sun's gravity so spinning or not, we ain't goin' nowhere fast.
Me think you need to think of a better scenario for disaster. But, saying that some einstein spod may prove me wrong, but me dont fink so!
An idea I had was that if you want some kind of really strange disaster movie is that you could have a larger mass than our sun enter our solar system and completely re-align all of our planets, but as you can imagine, the smoke was green on that one and details seem to have faded - damnit!

Yes, the rotation of the earth has nothing to do with gravity.
However since everything has an inertia if the earth were to stop spinning there would be huge tidal waves, volcanoes would erupt, buildings would collapse, people would fall over, the weather would change globally, it may even cause an ice age.

Well, it does depend on how quick the earth stopped spinning. If we're talking over 100 years then we'd probably get bigger tides but nothing hugely catastrophic. But if the world was to stop spinning in a couple of minutes (but how!!???) yes, the scenario would be a little bit different.

Perhaps if something did enter the solar system and cancelled out the sun, so there was amn equal gravitational pull to the sun and this other "object" the earth would become static and therefore stop it from rotating.
I'm also puzzled as to how to get the earth to slow down pretty instantly.
Perhaps, a large bomb? No, that wouldn't do it. It would probably have to be something to do with space. A huge space wind or something.

an experiment on earth creates a vortex in the centre of the earths core, which acts like a whirlpool. This vortex is spinning in the opposite direction to the earth and so cancels out the natural spin of the earth, perhaps even causing it to spin the opposite direction.

Scientists in America are doing experiments with ion collison. If we study explosions like that under controlled circumstances we might understand the "big bang" that caused the bierth of the cosmos. Apparently therew is a slight chance that this could cause what is known as a "black hole"
With that limted knowledge I wrote a stupid story for my 11th grade english class, my teacher bought it anyway.

What about if they send astronauts up to space, on some kind of mission. then earth stops spinning, they come back down somehow and everything is different. could make a better story.
