ok, i'll play alone...er, i mean, along.

the original intent of this thread was to understand what one believes about the current state of the universe in regards to the controversy: open or closed.

open means that the universe is expanding infinitely, and therefore, capable of having 'x' mass.

closed means that the universe has periods of expanding and contracting movements. (thank you, mr. hawking)

the current trend is for an open universe.
i am more for the latter.
naturally, this controversy alternates depending upon newly discovered areas of evidence...this has yet to be brought up. maybe later.

I think the universe is open, always expanding. I've never personally read anything by Steven Hawkings so I really don't know what he has to say about the universe contracting, however, I would be interested in finding out about it.
If anyone could briefly *note use of Briefly* enlighten me to as the main jist of it.
