These look gorgeous Charles. One of the biggest regrets of my hifi/Alltec journey was giving up my vertical'd 9844s a few years ago. I wonder where they are now.... enjoy in good health. I'll make another pair some day.

If love to hear more about the horn and the designer....
I remember your project well.
Sad to hear that you had to move them along.
Remember, we're really only temporary caretakers of the good stuff.

So true! And there's satisfaction in that too. It gets even more fun when you finally accept it's more about the journey than the destination. I moved on to 604s, Model 19s...on large format horns at the moment. I will say, there's nothing quite like the sound of dual 414s. It's definitely a format I will revisit one day. And no way that could have happened without your help!

Hello. Yuichi Arai is the designer and the plans and information can be found here Arai Horn
Many have continued to build the horn and they can be found around the world from some dedicated builders from Vietnam to Germany to here in the states. I think it's an amazing horn and here's some of the process. Arai Horn: Arai 290
My friend and amazing speaker designer and builder of over 35 years Jon Anderson who built my dream 604's seen here Scored some PAS speakers out of curiosity. Very surprised! came across an estate sale find and showed me some minty Altec 9844's that were in a gentleman's home. I am very satisfied with the 604's that we ended up with (best sounding duplex cabinets/drivers combination I have ever owned) but always had some vertical 9844's in the back of my mind but never gave things much more thought. Jon it seems had the same thought and ran with the idea taking it to the ultimate as he tends to do. Woofers were went through though everything looked minty new and voice coils were all replace as new due to one rubbing ever so slightly. Brand new crossovers were built with much better modern components. The cabinets are rock solid and finished in a custom automotive candy paint and sound better than they look. The The result are these beautiful speakers. I just got the first listen in his home yesterday and I wanted to bring them home that moment as I envisioned what they might sound like in my dedicated room. I was floored! Jon had a few final tweaks and if everything goes smooth they will be here with next week where Jon and I can do our listening comparing, and any final adjustments if needed as the room is a great place to really hear what the gear can do.
All remaining original cabinets and components other than the woofers and horn drivers that were used in the new project will be refurbished at a later time as I just could not get rid of them. I have been very fortunate over almost 30+ years to have made friends with passionate people like Jon who has built some speakers that I'd like to die with in the 604's and now these vertical 9844's and also James Burgess who has built some of the most amazing tube gear to really suite my taste and make this whole journey a true audio pleasure.
