Colts' coach more proud of Christ than 'blackness'

When asked about social significance of Dungy's victory, Jesus is answer

Super Bowl XLI had been hyped as a major social milestone in U.S. history, since for the time, the head coaches of both teams were black.

But when the game was over and the Indianapolis Colts had defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17, the winning coach said Jesus Christ was more important than any racial moment.

During the nationally televised post-game show on CBS, coach Tony Dungy was asked specifically about the "social significance."

Jim Nantz of CBS Sports: This is one of those moments, Tony, where there is also social significance in this victory, and to have your hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Tell me what this means to you right now.

Tony Dungy: I'll tell you what. I'm proud to be representing African-American coaches, to be the first African-American to win this. It means an awful lot to our country. But again, more than anything, I've said it before, Lovie Smith and I, not only the first two African-Americans, but Christian coaches showing that you can win doing it the Lord's way. And we're more proud of that.

The Associated Press reported Dungy's comments about God in stories it moved on its wire service, but the Bloomberg News Service only published the portion regarding African-Americans, and edited out the mention of Christian coaches.

Both Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy made history this year.

Lovie was the first black head coach to earn a trip to the super bowl (Dungy followed a few hours later)

And Tony Dungy was the first black head coach to win a Super Bowl.

Both are strong "family values" type of people and both are highly respected on and off the field.
Both are great coaches who deserve all the recognition that they recieve! And both are great friends!

So what's the problem? The fact that he has "big ups" for the G man, or that some newspaper decided not to mention the G man?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The ?problem? is that the media just can?t let two guys coach their teams. Yes it?s historic that they are the first and second BLACK head coaches to go to the super bowl, but he is saying to give it a rest.

As usual the liberal media has to create it?s own agenda. They just can?t report the news.

I'm gonna agree with Trav on this one. I think it was important to mention it, but ESPN (especially) just wouldn't let it go. Tony Dungy is a great coach, period. He built a team that won the Super Bowl the year after he was fired in Tampa, and he has four 12+ win seasons and a Super Bowl title with the Colts.

I think it reaches a point where it becomes almost condescending to the person you're ostensibly trying to praise. I've posted on here in the past of my trials and tribulations with a former employer of mine that shall remain nameless (only to say it's an insurance company named after the capital of Minnesota). We would get an intranet email in the mornings that would say something like "Chicago office names first black woman V.P." In a way, it was almost like they were saying "hey, we met our quota requirement, so if you're thinking of suing us someday for racial discrimination, we got it covered." I always wondered why couldn't they they say Chicago hires new V.P., and then have her picture? And you know, talk about her credentials, backgroud, how wonderful it's been to work for St. P- I mean, my nameless former employer, etc.
