I am correlating the ToyBiz main habit of rehashing figures with minor variations (if that) into other sets with new content or style to that of what the movie industry is starting to do with movies.
I know some didn't like it, but I liked the movie Underworld. I galdly picked up the original when it was released, watched it and was happy. Then a few months afterward, they announced a Director's cut ofthe movie wtih an additional 23-minutes of footage /reediting. I thought cool! I'll grab it and try to seel the old one. Now that worked (that time), and I purchased the exended version and loved it.
Now what gets me, is they just announced they are going to be releasing that movie on Suprbit format, and I am a major fan of Superbit, and I considered it for a second (and may have longer than that had they told us which version is going on Superbit!), and then thought about it and got downtrodden over it sounding like action figures from ToyBiz.
They release the movie as it was in theaters, to then see how it does, and repackage it, and do it again. All with minor changes that make it slightly more appealing than the first time around, but another $20-$30 out of pocket for it.
They also announced that Spider-man 2 is going to be released onthe same day in a 2-disc set full of features and extras as well as in a movie-only format of Superbit. I bought the superbit version of Spider-man just a few months ago cause the movie is so much better in that format if you have the equipment for it. So now I have the orignal release of Spider-man with the features, and the Superbit version. I will most likely be buying the same for the second movie. One to have the features, and other to have the superbit. *sigh*
I can't lump all the movies that are releasing DC/EE versions into this as Hellboy, and the LOTR Trilogy were set up as such (and a just announced CoR Director's cut will be released), and there have been one or two movies that were intially released in Superbit format (Panic Room and then the upcoming Spider-man 2)
Why can't the studios just decide to announce them far enough ahead of time to allow us to choose better, and/or get their ass in gear and release all different formats of the same movie content on the same day! They could do Spuerbit releases at the same time if they just gave up worrying about Full Frame versions of the movie - who the hell buys those anyway?? Do your fellow man a favor and if you ever see them purchasing a Full Frame movie when you are in a store - smack them aside the head and inform them of the idiot action they are about to undertake!
viva la Superbit!
