The WTC puts a whole new twist on this matter.
While the WTC was about real life and this forum is about baseball, in a twisted way, the reason The Taliban are so dysfunctional is they refuse to allow Sports as a means to let off steam.
To the Taliban, scoring a goal is a successful sports/suicide mission.
In this country, we call scoring a run, a touchdown, a goal, a basket, for what it is, a sport....
The Talban call scoring "Jihad", and it involves murder.
New York rightfully received help from the whole country after Sept. 11, but can't New York reciprocate and not need twice the payroll of most other sports teams to compete?
It seems off axis to me for New York to recieve financial aid after Sept. 11 as a blue collar city in need, while paying team payroll with caviar money.

The most obsence thing is NY teams getting public money for new stadiums. They are getting $5m a year just for planning and feasibility. All because Guliani is a sports fan. (he agreed it)
Before anyone compares to the Jake they are missing one key thing. The Jake rejuvinated a suffering franchise, even a whole city. Neither the franchises or the city needs public money spent on stadiums to help them.

For the uninformed, Mayor Mike Bloomberg has postponed any public financing of the proposed new Yankee & Mets stadia. Bloomberg knows the City can't pay for them right now, and it would be absolutely wrong to ask New Yorkers to spend $$$ on frivolous things such as baseball stadia.

I am actually proud of a politician in that instance...Bloomberg did the unpopular but right thing of refusing to give the Yanks and Mets their new stadiums. Mr. G really rubbed me the wrong way for some reason, everyone seemed to want to anoint him a hero of sorts, but for some reason I didn't get that same feeling. And my suspicions of him were confirmed when he wanted to leave a "legacy" of giving the Yanks and the Mets their new stadium. Man is there any other way of totally sucking up to big business interests?! First off, NYC does not have any money, and you are going to tell me that this would revitalize growth? How the hell? Sure it will give construction workers jobs, but they are being paid from city money, not private money.
I don't believe the public should finance anymore stadiums. With the obscene salaries taht are being paid around and the media contracts MLB gets they should be able to afford their own ballparks.
And Steinbrenner is just as bad...the city is hurting badly, so what does he do, he pays out an extra 40 million dollars in salary next year to a bunch of already rich members of society...how about paying that 40 million back to the city Steinbrenner?! What a joke.
