I spoke with Larry recently about a high boost application and the 3" Thermal. Now, I got rid of the 2 1/4" Thermal because, after about 6 months, it got loud as hell. But, I don't want an exhaust to restrict my ability to get a high output engine setup. So instead of the 3" Thermal, does anybody think it would be possible to route a dual exhaust setup with an ID of ~2.12"? It seems that a dual setup of 2.12" will yield the same volumetric area for flow as a 3" exhaust. Is this idea feasible?
What do you guys think?

That might work, however you will be adding a lot more weight to the car. So that might counter act the gain you get.

I thought of the weight issue, but I didn't think it would be more than an additional 40 lbs or so. If someone could indeed work on something like this, and have it produce a quiet ride, I think it would be an optimal setup (and stock-like sound) for the high output systems that Larry will be selling.

I was also after a quiet exhaust note and I did not want to sacrifice flow. So, I did go for a dual exhaust setup on my sol and I am very happy with it. I used a simple formula to calculate cross-sectional area and it turned out the following info:
Area of a Circle: pi*r^2
3" pipe = 3.141592 (1.5^2)= 7.07"
2.5" pipe = 3.141592 (1.25^2)= 4.91"
dual 2.25" = 2[3.141592 (1.125^2)= 7.95"
dual 2" = 2[3.141592 (1^2)= 6.28"
Now you also have to take into account the bends in an exhaust, none are perfect but a madrel bend will flow better than a crush bend. My exhaust is very quiet but I attribute that to the RS*R mufflers.
Finally, I did weigh the stock exhaust and because of the huge muffler, it was only 6lbs lighter than my new dual exhaust.

Your math isn't correct. The area of the 3" pipe is only 7.065 square inches. I think you forgot that R = .5(D), so R for a 3" pipe is 1.5", not 3".

Not that I want to spend discussing calculations or anything, but whether you use the radius or diameter, you will still be able to arrive at the proper size for dual setup that gives the same flow as a larger single pipe.
That said, Blownsol, how did you route the piping? Do you have any pictures under the car? How quiet is it? And what is the piping diameter of your dual setup?

phicycle: thanks for being sharp http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif
AvanishV: Sorry, no pics from underneath. There is one from the rear floating around, just do a search. How quiet is it? Well, idle is just like stock, and WOT is just a few dbs louder than stock with a deeper tone. However, I am installing a Kami header with a 2.5" Carsound cat later today and the blower is yet to be put on. So it will get louder, I hope not too much.
As far as the system goes, after the cat there is a 3ft long 2.5" pipe that splits in a "Y" into two 2.25 pipes. They both go over the rear A-arms, like the stock system, into dual RS*R cans.
