I just got a hold of the Landlords of Atlantis CD by the Fire Merchants and the first song, Lifetimes, raises an important question for me: Does the tune start in 4/4(with Toss Panos playing an extremely cool quintuplet, five over four thing)and modulate to make it into a 5/4 time signature. Or does the tune start and stay in five for pretty much the duration?(with a little phrasing trick to make it seem like 4/4 at the beginning) From my perspective of listening to it, I'm thinking the former.
Props to Steve and the other guys who mentioned this CD in the "Unheralded Drummers" thread by the way. I'm hooked.

I'm prety sure the tune is in five, and hes playing four over it. I've spoke with him about it actually. Once the main groove gets going, its in five.
Great friggin tune, huh?
That and "Thing Fifteen" which has a bar 4/4 then 7/8.

Fantastic tunes. I like the varied styles on it.(a taste of reggae, odd meter punk/thrash) Who could ask for more?

The Fire Merchants disc with Chester Thompson is just as good. He's got a "bigger" playing style than Toss, but it fits, and there are lots of odd time sigs on it.
