As I write this (midnight Sat Ap 12, soon to be Sunday Ap 13) Brent Sadler is driving around in a convoy near Tikrit, unchallenged by anyone. He's on his own, not "embedded" but just civilians and press. Groups of Iraqi men are walking around, of military age, some with weapons but none in uniform. Most wave at him and his 7 veichle CNN convoy. He passes through an abandonded military check-point, no one home.
This guy's been covering the middle-east for 20 years. He's completely flabbergasted! He's never seen anything like it.
He's now driven INTO a military complex, no one there! Tanks and APCs and trucks all abandoned. No looting there, stuff is just laying around. Amazing!
Tikrit was supposed to be the most loyal place for Saddam, but it looks like it's all over.
I think of our Firebird, and am so glad he'll get there long after the shooting has stopped.
The fat lady is singing in Iraq, it's all over but the shouting.
PS: Holy Crap! Iraq spent a whole LOT of $$$ on their military! These are huge bases!
