I love the super 8 camera I have now...Bell and Howell ms45...has every feature you'd ever want...question is, with all the deals on super 8 cameras right now, is there a better super 8 camera that I could pick up for not a lot of money? I realize there are better cameras out there (like the beaulieu's), but they are pricey. My camera is in great condition, works fine, great pictures...but could I get something better for a great price, not counting the ultra expensive cameras? Think I should buy a backup camera, and if so, which has the best quality/features for the best price? ( nice lens too!) Thanks, Mike

there probably is no one "best" Super-8 camera.
Some of the best cameras are the Canon 814XLS and Canon 1014XLS...
The Elmo 1012XLS (although it's a little lacking in "extras".)
The Nizo 800 series Super-8 cameras are nice.
The Bauer Royal 8E & 10 E Cameras had a lot of nice features on them.\
The Nikon R-10 & Nikon R-8 are good cameras, (although I have been tricked by the focusing on a couple of occasions.)
Anyone want to brag about their camera that was not mentioned above?
Although I consider the Chinon's & Sankyo's not quite as nice as the above, some are very loyal to those cameras and have had nice filming experiences with them.

I will shamelessly plug my Canon 814 XL-S currently on ebay
Of course you did not say what a good price is and what an ultra expensive price is. Would help alot in recommending a second camera for you.

Well, Shamelessly leave another link!

Ultra-expensive for a used super 8 camera for me would be 1000 and up...Higher end would be about 300 -1000, and bargain good price would be 50.00 to 300.00. Your camera is obviously very nice, Cameraguy, I hope you get what you want for it! I'm sure you've taken good care of it, which is probably half the battle when you buy used camera equipment! Mike

While I cannot personally vouch for the condition of Cameraguy's Super-8 Canon 814-XLS Camera that he is selling on e-bay, The Canon 814-XLS does put out some of the prettiest pictures you will ever see.
The dual option variable shutter of either 150 degree or 220 degrees is an extremely useful option. The camera has an excellent lens, multiple filming speeds, an intervalometer, and a plus minus variable ASA rating so you can keep your exposure in the automatic setting AND by tinkering with the plus minus ASA rating, you can EXACTLY nail the overall exposure you hope to get while in the automatic mode, this is a really cool function, and one that has been copied 20 years later by the Canon-XL1S video camera.
This function is so cool that you can put in any ASA Super-8 film that is currently made and by using the ASA plus/minus feature, get the proper exposure.
Very few cameras have such an exacting feature.

I guess the more extras a camera has, the more flexible and i suppose the better it is. The cannons are the best bet i guess, I have a 518sv, but my favorite is my sankyo cm400. I value cost highly when looking at a camera.
Although one day i would love a high end camera!

I love the Canon 518 SV. It is one of the best values out there. Its got the solid Canon construction and optics, 24 frames per second and full manual exposure control but without the large price tag.
I actually decided to keep my 814 XL-S at the last minute since my GS-1200 projector sold above my expectations. A perfectly working mint condition camera is a hard thing to give up.
To Mike: the camera I personally would recomend the most for under $300 is the Canon 1014 electronic. They are selling pretty low right now. Under $100 I would look into the Canon 518SV. Sometimes they even sell for under $35. The only down down side to the older Canons above is that they are loud.

The Russian Quarz super 8mm clockwork camera is a good bet if you do not want to be relying on batteries. It is also a very good camera and a joy to use. Plus the fact it is new!
