This music isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I do like heavy music. I got turned on to Death awhile ago and couldn't believe the drummer had these feet. He is ridiculously fast and pretty creative, and he played a boat prop on this disc.
I caught them when they came to Detroit at a foul nightclub called Harpos with about 200 people and he in fact played everything and was faster and more coordinated than I expected. He had two of those huge mega bell rides one to the left and one to the right and would play these Castronovo on speed patterns on them. And the guy is a BIG guy, which made the speed of his arms even more incredible. He plays left hand lead, maybe because he is so big.
Don't download if you don't dig the "brutal" vocals or if you don't like metal. I warn you.

Gene Hoglan is an awesome drummer.

Let's not forget Sean Reinhart. He played in Death on the Human Album. His style set the stage for drummers like Gene and Richard Christy.
Sean also recorded an amazing album with the band Cynic, "Focus" Jazz Fusion Metal.
You must check out these albums to see where Gene is coming from.
Also, Chuck "Death" Schuldiner(spell) the guitarist, who passed away all too soon, wrote most of the drum parts--if not all of them.

I read an interview where Hoglan said he came up with the boat prop and the weird beats.
He does play some off the wall stuff. And the double bass stuff is SICK.

I haven't heard much of the Death stuff. Saw Hoglan live with Strapping Young Lads out of Vancouver. He has lots of natural ability.

Couldn't understand what the vocalist was saying (singing?) but they should've recorded him after his vocal cords healed.
The drumming was very cool! Nice control and clever ideas...musical and more than just "a lot of notes". So, how do you pull something like that off? Obviously, some serious practice time for one. But other factors are involved here such as the duration of the kick notes (real short) and the high-frequency emphasis (click or slap) at the start of each kick hit. More than likely, this stuff was performed and mixed at some serious sound pressure levels. The only way to hear the kick in that sonic environment is to boost the attack (the high-end) of the kick.
....I'm going to go practice.

Lots of speed metal drummers do their really fast stuff with the beaters close to the head and at a surprisingly low volume. The clicky attack comes from a healthy boost of 4K at the mixing board. Derek Roddy is another very,very fast drummer.

FlamTriplet - thanks for mentioning Sean R. I thought Cynic was was a really cool band. Holdsworth style guitar over a very heavy rhythm section. Lots of fusion influences as you mentioned. Meshuggah is another frightening band, with difficult metrically challenging drum parts. The drummer, Tomas Haake will play 2/4 with his hands over 11/16 with his feet, etc. Once again, the vocals will alienate most of the people here.
