The AN (Army-Navy) standard was
established many years ago by the US
military to set a common measurement
for hose and fittings. It designates
the outside diameter (O.D.) of
the ridged metal tube that is compatible
with each size of fitting.
NPT -Stands for "National Pipe Tapered", or to some "National Pipe Thread". It is an American Standard Taper Pipe Thread.

Autometer uses a 1/8" NPT fitting on their sending units.

A quick way to remember the AN thing is the AN # is the metal tube O.D.s number of 16ths. 4 in your example would be 4/16 or 1/4. This can be misleading though, so read the link above to clarify things.

Chances are, your gauge has a 1/8-27 NPT thread.
