One of my favorites:
Tony Williams on RED MASK from ANGEL STREET.
I'd recommend starting with:
TOUCH ME from the same CD, then playing Red Mask immediately aferward. Sounds as if they've been recorded together and split into 2 separate tracks.
Actually, I think Steve had put up a video of Tony doing 'Touch Me' live. It's a short solo drum piece. Tony was THE MAN!

tony will 4ever be the man.i had some of these songs off angel street on a comp.a friend gave me.for some reason its hard 2 find alot of those capitol/1980's tony albums here in vancouver.man,he played so beautifully.this world needs tony.xoxoxox>beats.,oh thanx for posting this track,as i have not heard it b4.

Yes, weird that most of his 80s CDs are OOP. FYI: Angel Street is new material. It's not a ompliation. Great stuff too! I dig all his 80s stuff. He didn't get cheezy like so many musicians were tempted to.

Red Mask: Awesome intro groove. What an amazingly clean drum sound! I selfishly wished that groove stayed just drums & bass, anticipating where Tony would have gone my minute 2.
Tony's playing reeks with confidence and strong personality- never met the guy, but can imagine him a very opinionated cat.

i hear the whole world talk about how wonderful tony williams is. so i went out and bought an "emergency" album but i didnt get it? apart from the early miles stuff.....what would u recommend to listen to.....?? i know hes wonderful cause all the cats (weckl, chambers, vinnie) learnt a great deal from him. ive seen great pictures of him doing amazing flurrys round the drums on a big yellow dw......where can i hear this late stuff?

Yeha, the first time I heard "Emergency!" I didn't really get it...then one time after some time, I was listening to it, and listening to the music, and his playing made so much sense.
At the very least, if you don't get the composition and phrasing of his playing, there are so KICK ASS licks on there. Awesome stuff, lots of cool flamming stuff and foot/LH independence. Plus the crazy full-throttle energy. And his inventiveness.
That's one of my favorite discs.

My fave Tony recording is the first Lifetime release,on Blue Note.This first incarnation was a band composed of players from outfits Tony was in.Sam Rivers-[LIST]Tenorsax
Herbie Hancock-piano
Ron Carter-bass
Bobby Hutchison-vibes
Gary Peacock-bass
Richard Davis-bass
It's 5 songs.All Tony compositions.Hancock helped arrange some of them.It was recorded in Aug-64.It seems this is one of the more available reissues.Why i love this album so much is that,it was his very first recording as leader and composer.And if u check the time line of Tony's recordings,he is one of the few Masters we had a chance to hear in the exuberence of his youth.He was only 18 at the time!!!If u are used to hearing Tony at breakneck jazz ride-pulse playing,or the more aggresive second version of Lifetime,or the nimble economical fluid playing in the 80's ,you see a real fascinating evolution .This particular recording is the blueprint for everything Tony would eventually record.It is kind of avant garde jazz,some improved pieces too.It is beautifully recorded,one of the best drum sounds ive ever heard.If u are into searching out Tony stuff,i cant recommend enough to start with this recording.Even if u hate it,u get a grasp at the concepts he was rapidly developing;actually a brand new way of playing really.He was recording with Miles at the time,so that would be a suggested place to go next.Pick up EVERYTHING he recorded with Miles Davis'"2ND.Greatest Quintet".A couple of guys in above posts expressed liking this era of Tony.Then u know what? Start following his recordings chronologically.He was simply ahead of his time.If u are really ambitious,try to note what other drummers, in the 4 decades Tony was working,were doing at that time.U may begin to realize with enuff listening,that Tony really was ahead of his time,and a true artist,absolutely NOONE could touch him.Still cant.So as u can see im a big fan,and this album truly moved me.Man i really love his drumming!!lol.I see ALOT of Tony in Vinnie's playing.They share alot of "drumistic" concepts,and they are adventurous and cavalier in there imagination.I was sold on Tony listening alot to those 64-69 Miles,i simply was blown away by that band,BUT,i was 4ever a true fan listening to the first Lifetime album.The Tony M.D. tribute issue has some very informative interviews with him.What moved me also upon discovering this album,whilst reading those interviews,is that he mentions,at great length, how much he loves the drums,he really was involved in his craft,and was always learning.ANYWAY>>>sorry for rambling.I am hoping this post may help you,Palmerlouie,in checkin out more Tony stuff.Emergency is a strange album to listen to(its badly mixed,but has been improved on in recent reissues.)as a primer to Tony.So hey if anyone has any Tony stuff i havent heard b4,plz post it!!!Much love and respect........beats. P.S.-Remember that P.I.L. song "rise"?,thats tony holding down a very cool straight beat,and his drums were recorded in a elevator shaft 4 that track.

[img]wink.gif[/img] .Im trying to compete with yer GINOURMOUS posts!.I hope u got something out of it,as i usually get a kick(and some lessons)from yer posts.I just re-read my post and it seemed a bit.....um....nutty.But i wouldnt bother to post at great length about Tony,if i knew that peeps were wanting to further check his stuff.Moreso,the Vinnie fans not in the know,MUST KNOW,that Vince is the linage of Tony William's contributions to the study of drumset.So hey if yer up to it:lets have a post off bro!LOL,we each give each other a drumming question,and,well,we spew on with our responses.Something to consider for the sheer fun of it!U will totally expound further than i ever could,unless u get me talkin about the future of drumming [img]wink.gif[/img] So,coolio,......beats....
