I actually bought a copy of modern drummer this month unfortunately and I noticed they are having their unknown drummer contest again. So I thought I'd start a topic where everyone could mention some great unknown drummers that should be famous but aren't. For clarification, unknown means they haven't been featured in any drum publication (had an article devoted to them). I also thought it would be good if people could post some links to examples of the drummer's playing.
Here is my contribution to great unknown drummers: Patrick Doody from Chicago IL. This guy has amazing double strokes and a killer sense of groove. Here's an example from his site:

I'll throw in another Chicago cat...Steve Gillis
Amazing chops, and some of the tightest grooves you'll ever hear. I have never heard another drummer play a House groove with the same feel as Mr. Gillis.
One more... a personal friend,... Robert Gates from Gary,IN(very well known in the Chicago area)...The guy has incredible groove,chops, and an all-round great guy.

Speaking of Chicago....Tom Hipskind!!! [img]wink.gif[/img] Actually there are many great players here, such as Kris Meyers, Ernie Adams, Robert Shy, Leon Joyce, Jim Hines, Jim Widlowski, Larry Beers just to name a FEW! I feel lucky to be working in such a cool place!

Phil Gould from Level 42. The man can groove hard and has a beautiful sense of direction. Awesome.

Thanks for the great sound sample Seipel. The quality doesnt quite let me here it, but from what I can hear he has some great ghost notes going on there. On the contrary, the groove is a little too filled up with them - but he has a great touch, that's for sure.

I'll mention one off the top of my head.
(Also from Chicago-area)....Joel W. Spencer. I've posted about him before, but he's a tremendous straight-ahead player. Great chops, beautiful touch and control, and plays with a lot of emotion and "fire." I'll see if I can dig up some clips....

One of the great Canadian drummers in the last 5 years is Toronto's Mark Kelso. This guy can groove like the best of them. Whenever I've seen him with a band, his playing just motivates each musician to excel.

Thanks for the wonderful link Groovissimo. I clicked on "Patricia's Song" as the first one. My concern on that one was the time! I understand that his snare pattern is meant to have a "lagging" feel to it but that just felt out of time to me. Are my ears playing tricks on me? Its only a minor difference but I think he's off time there.

In that tune "Patricia's Song", we only hear a small part. I have the CD and when you get more into the song, you realize that his beat is right on. I think that it just seems a little off because of the fact that the song was cut off just after the intro on the site. Mark is one of the more "steady" drummers when it comes to keeping time.
