The 210 is suppose to sound great and really take over the room. The site below (or on top) is a guy that splits the 210.

210,s are great cabinets, but extremely big and heavy!
The midbass they make is outstanding!
They also require a BIG room to really function properly, you should use the wings, and I am one who does not belive in cutting the cabinet in half as mentioned in an earlier post! If you want a smaller cabinet, then get A7,s or something smaller, but you use these as they are! DO NOT MODIFY THEM!
Excellent cabs though!
I?m happy with diy 828 - but 210 or 211 would be great for a real large listening room. My room at the moment is far to small and its impossible to make any measurement in it i can trust...

David,
I have happily been using 210's in the 211 position for about 2 years now and would not want to go back to my previous A-5/828 system. This 211 cabinet orientation places the HF horn at ear level and aligned over the center of both woofers.
The LF horn dispersion pattern will match the pattern of the HF horn better.
I feel this is more suitable than the 210 in a home environment, unless you have an enormous high ceiling room. You just need a large, wide room, and can toe them in towards the listening area.
I get flat horn output to 60hz in my room and useful response to about 40. The quality of bass is very clean and tight, with considerable power.
I did the Dickinson mods, which make the cabinet 1 foot shorter on the reflex chamber.Never heard a split 210 so I can't comment on it.

First post.....glad to know there's other people out there who actually care about good sound for their music.
As a long term project I intend on constructing a horn-based hi-fi system for home use (and for private parties at home). I would like to keep the set-up simple and stereo. There's a gentleman in my area who has a pair of 210 cabinets w/o the drivers. I understand that they have great response down to 50Hz. The only trouble I have is that these things are huge. I would like to know if it is possible to have these cabinets mounted on their sides with the horns elevated on brackets. This would be an accomidation until I have a proper sized space to have the 210's mounted upright with the horns on top.
Then there's the deeper question which is....should I be more patient in this matter and go for some smaller size cabinets instead? I've found some 828 cabinets w/o drivers as well for $300/pair.
Thank you for any help you can provide on this matter.
David
We been thru the split 210 issue before. It results in 1/2 the mouth area of the 210 with horn loading to about 150 Hz only. Also there is
a mismatch between horn output vs reflex output.
Nothing wrong with this being similar to 825-828 but it is not a 210-211!
Better to use both upper and lower flares for reflex volume and use a much smaller cab less than 6 feet tall. Of course will need to strenghten the cab/flares and fill sharp voids of the flares with foam/fiberglass to prevent resonances.
Another alternative is to use the unnecessarily large vented volume as a sub cabinet.
What exactly is the Dickinson mod and how does this affect the overall response? I was talking with a friend last night about losing the 2ft part of the 210 and then cutting a port on the rear with the same area as the former front vent.
Also how do you mount the horns on the 210 in the 211 position? I would imagine that they should be elevated on rigid brackets so they can project the sound to standing ear level (provided you are taller than 3.5 ft
David,
Read Dickinsons large VOT article at www.soundpractices.com. Basically, it involves bracing and stiffening up the stock cabinet and reducing the reflex chamber by half. The difference is quite audible, much less drumming and resonance from the walls and horn flares.
Use the same hardware Altec used on the 210 to mount the HF horn. It is 2 L-brackets on the front of the horn and a sliding adjustable bracket on the rear allowing a large range of angles on the horn. They show up on E-Bay often.
