Shoulder drop from trad grip?

Ive been getting my trad grip together for about a yr now, and whilst deciding to have a blast in front of a mirror, noticed my trad shoulder drops almost like it has a weight, especially when burning round the kit and fast BPM's.

Reading some of the threads on the VD site, its been noticed by some that Vinnie and Dave do a similar thing, as opposed to say, Virgil, who has the most ridiculous power trad style ive ever seen. Is this motion correct or unnatural, or just down to kit set up? I cant seem to keep my elbow away from my side, it just slowly creeps back in and seems to cause unnatural fluity between hands.. If this makes any sense to anyone, possible solutions?

Unless you tilt your snare sloping down away from your left hand, you have to drop your shoulder. That is the only way to get the stick parallal with the drum head which gives you the most bang for your buck energy wise.

I think Virgil tilts his snare. Weckl just started to tilt his with all of the Gruber stuff. My teacher won't let me practice the traditional grip without tilting the snare. The grip did come from a tilted marching snare position.

I, myself, no longer use it, after
over 25 years. I find my approach
to the drums much more balanced
and symmetrical.

Of course, I am not going to tell
you that these players aren't doing
a great job with it. There have also
been monsters for decades, who've
used it with success.

Well Virg said he achieved his posture by practising with 2 telephone directories jammed between his elbows and sides, i suppose if it worked for him you could give it a bash!

Maybe you could visit all the shopping centres in town and smash up the books there, probably get arrested for walking round with two hammers anyways!!

Thanx for the input guys, im already using tilt but ive tweaked it some more and seems to work, although i have to change my right hand to compensate, including the toms. Guess its all about angles!

Not sure about telephone directories and hammers though! [img]smile.gif[/img]
