604E vs 604E2
Hello,
I have a 604E original cone 21184-2 and a 604E2 original cone 33914-1. Even though they don't look the same, are they a sonic match so long as I match up the diaphragms? I'm wanting to pair them up until I find appropriate mates. I'll rear mount them. Thank you

Re: 604E vs 604E2
I would have to think that you could use an EQ to even them out.
It's really hard to make these Altec speakers sound bad.

The 604E2 is basically a 604g. I think they will be close enough.

Re: 604E vs 604E2
Thank you for the replies. I put 34647 diaphragms I had in 902s in both of them and took some measurements tonight. I think I will be alright. Also, the 604E2 has a tangerine phase plug and the 604E has a radial (slit?) phase plug. Doesn't seem to be much difference. I've had these for a while and didn't even think to mate them up. :Embarrassed:

Re: 604E vs 604E2
Hooked 'em up to amps to check for any anomalies and thankfully there are none. I don't have them in cabinets yet, but I adjusted the crossover levels with the tweeter and sub to make up for the lack of bass and they sound pretty good without even being mounted up. I have some cabinets I was going to use for something else that I will use for these.
The 604E2 is a little worse for wear. I picked the trash from the surround and the dope looks sagging and a little thinner than the other one. The cone is also dirty and lighter in color. What should I carefully clean the cone with? Also, can I heat the dope up to spread it around with an acid brush or use some chemical like lacquer thinner, xylene, toluene, mineral spirits? Thank you

Re: 604E vs 604E2
I use a Windex glass cleaner sprayer in a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to clean dust, etc., collectors as it quickly disolves all but the toughest grime [cigarette, cooking, etc., smoke],brushing with a very dense, yet fine bristled artist's brush that I no longer remember its type, etc., info to get into corners and for now no quick way to take a photo of it; then use terry cloth or paper towels on large areas.
Even though the bottle is nearly all just purified water, a fine mist spray won't damage anything I've used it on and a very interesting side affect is that it puts a bit of a barrier on the surface that keeps it from collecting dust so quick on models, open case tube amps, fake flower, etc., plants, etc.. Of course airbrush/canned air spray is fine for quickly cleaning/drying complex stuff like car models, etc..
Acetone/nail polisher remover + cheap brushes will soften the surrounds and this water based version is Moyan's direct replacement IF P.E. and/or others haven't outsourced/cheapened it up.

Re: 604E vs 604E2
I found some sticky surround treatment from vintage-ar on ebay. Seems similar to what is on there.
