Caught Michael on PBS with Ashford & Simpson, Pat Simmons & Eric Johnston. The gal playing drums was solid. Anyone know her name?
I have always fantasized about playing, "I keep forgettin'" w/McDonald. Jeff played that tune to perfection--as signature a tune as Gadd's 50 Ways... IMO.
Her name is Yvette Preyer. Great player and singer, she has tour with McDonald for the last 3 years (I think).
I Keep Forgettin' ......a classic, indeed.
By the way, anyone heard of 'Rhythm Magazine' (UK), has a special tribute to Jeff Porcaro coming out in early August?

I got an email by one of the guys putting that together the other day. Looking over the stuff he sent me, it looks A LOT like MD's tribute last year with all the guest drummer's reflecting and all.
Aren't they a year late here?
And yes, Yvette did lay it down solid. This type of groove drumming that is driven by a vocalist is what Jeff excelled at. Seeing the two origianl Doobie Bro's w/McDonald was cool. They played some classic tunes with a real R&B flavor. This type of drumming is ALL about taste, not chops. Yet, it does take a considerable amount of technique to play as smooth and effortless as she did. I can't recall another female drummer playing that well in a pop context. After all, there aren't that many of them now is there! [img]wink.gif[/img]

I guess you're not a big Sheila E. or Hilary Jones fan. [img]wink.gif[/img] I don't think it makes any difference whether a male or female is the drummer of a band. Music skill and talent are equal opportunity. As time goes on, we will see more women drummers out there. I have seen quite a few around now.

I agree, male or female don't matter...there are very few females however. I have never really seen Hilary play and Shelia usually plays percussion. But I have not seen them or really anyone else lay it down in a pocket or grrove context like Yvette did with McDonald.
