Don't know how this one got by me first time around but I just saw the most amazing DVD featuring Steve Lukather, Simon Phillips, David Garfield, and a monster bassist whose name I forget. It's one of many line-ups of the revolving door band Los Lobotomys entitled Lukather & Friends. I'd forgotten what a badass Simon is (my bad.) The band storms through The Bomber (James Gang), Freedom (Hendrix) and the oddly titled Party In Simon's Pants (plus four other tunes.) Vinnie may have slipped to second place among my favorite drummers.
Does anybody know of any CDs this foursome has done? Any recommendations on other fusion projects Simon's been involved with?

Party In Simone's Pants is taken from Luke's solo album entitled: CANDYMAN, should be under either Steve Lukather or Los Lobotomys.
There's a story behind it, don't really remember it but something like Simone being very hung-over and had to do some clinic. Too much "Jagermeister" I think Luke said?
Simon also have a couple of solo albums out: Symbiosis, Protocol and one more, can't remember the title.

I didn't know they had a DVD out. 'Party in Simon's Pants' is a bad tune. 17/8 with nice ghost notes. Simon's 'Another Lifetime' is good. Nice classic Simon Phillips drum sound. I'd recommend looking for Toto's Tambu CD in the used or bargain bin. It has a song called 'Dave's Gone Skiing'. It's similiar to 'Party...' only in 9/8. Very fusiony. Nice stuff. Also if you can find Toto's 'Livefields' in the bargain/used bin it has a nice version of 'Dave's...' and 'Jake to the Bone', the cool fusion tune found on Jeff Porcaro's last Toto studio album, 'Kingdom of Desire'.

Years ago I went to see a friend's band play at a club in So. California. They did a good job of advertising because the place was packed. They were the first of two acts for that night. After my friend's act finished, half of the audience left. I hung out to see who the next group was.
They brought out this huge yellow kit that looked strangely like an incarnation of the H.M.S. Phillips and sure enough it was Los Lobotomys with Simon, Lukather, Pena and Garfield. They just came out with Candy Man and I heard all those tunes for the first time that night. An amazing show! The Candy Man CD is a must and I also have a copy of that show on DVD from Germany (I think). Definitely worth having.

Force Majure is a great cd,but so is the out fo print Protocal. for the record Bobby Kimball is not on Tambu. He is only on Mindfiled, Livefields and the new Thru the Looking Glass cd. Livefields with Simon is a great live disc.
Ray Russells A Table Next to The Band is a really good disc with Simon. Also the last 2 Derek Sherinian cds with Simon are killer as is Ryo Okumoto's cd.

I know it's far from the Lobotomys stuff, but I'd really recommend Phillips' jazz project, Vantage Point. That's a great disc! (but I guess some of you would say it doesn't swing enough [img]wink.gif[/img] ...)
