Scammy Sosa got caught with a corked bat.
Well Albert Belle did it, and we cheered him.
So there's no difference, I guess ???

Seems like the national media is quickly rushing to Sosa's side after MLB announced that no other corked bats were found. Sosa's excuse is pathetic. The idea that you'd use a corked bat during batting practice to give the fans a thrill, is very egotistical, if not impossible since you'd have to get to the stadium before the gates open to watch BP these days. Of course he isn't dumb enough to have any other bats corked(at least on hand) that would kill his "only for batting practice" alibi. You keep only one on hand, get caught and it's easy to use that excuse. I find it odd that out of 78 bats on hand that he would just happen to grab the corked one. Lets see that's about a 1.1% chance, not likely.
Sammy EXPOSED! Here on Hostboard. (every dog has his day)
When I first heard Sammy's excuse, I was like,"OH how nice", then a moment later I went, "wait a minute, how INSULTING!"
The fans want to see the ball leave the park, so it doesn't matter how you do it!
What an Egoist, to smack a ball out of the park "for the fans" with a corked bat, then smile and tip your cap. sheesh.
To have raw ability and STILL CHEAT, that really is awful. Sammy was accused a few years ago of not giving any money to his own charity even as other players such as Mark McGwire had given something like $100,000 to Sammy's Charity.
And one other thing. If the balls in batting practice are thrown slower than in the game, wouldn't you need a heavier bat to make the ball go farther?
It seems a lighter bat with a slower thrown ball wouldn't achieve the same result as a heavier bat with a slower thrown ball.
I just can't believe how major league baseball is going out of its way to protect Sosa. There statement that they honestly belived Sosa when he fed them his BS is troubling. I say this because I keep thinking that baseball is becoming like the NBA in that it feels it needs to protect and keep happy the superstars. Look at the strike zones for the superstars both pitchers and hitters and you can see Michael Jordan constantly going to the foul line on bogus foul calls. It would have been nice for some one in baseball to tell some of the Latin American plays to come out and prove their comments about racial treatment. It seems they are never forced to back up their claims, yet no one challenges them.
If you will watch the tape of the actual incident, you see the bat break, and Sammy takes off for first base. i have watched it several times and tried to see some reaction from sammy after the bat breaks...like an "oh **** , i'm screwed look", but it isn't there. he runs to first like he always does. then he went to the dugout and went through his usual stupid routine of throwing water on his face. he kept cool the whole time, apologized, etc....he isn't a hollywood actor, and never will be, i don't think tom hanks could have pulled off a performance like that if his life depended on it.
what i'm saying is that if sammy always used a corked bat, he would have had some fear when he got caught. also, as far as having the 70 something bats checked, they don't keep all of those bats in the dugout at one time...making the "odds" of him picking the bad bat much higher.
i don't know if i should believe him or not...but in my opinion, he should get a "fair trial" so to speak.
It's possible that it was an "honest" mistake.
The part that bugs me is that he used the bat in batting practice so that the fans would ooooh and aaahhhhh at his tape measure blasts.
Now, if baseball were a sport of one player on a team, and all we did was go to watch Sammy hit a ball, then I still wouldn't like that the bat he used has been altered, but perhaps one could argue that every sport has enhancements that allow their athletes to do something better.
But the selfish part to me is that Sammy has teammates, and the more "Sammy Circusville" atmosphere he creates, via the corked bat used during batting practice, the more attention he takes away from his teammates.
And when it comes to salary renewal, these are the kind of things that get brought up by Sammy's agent so that Sammy can get even more money.
The question is, does the extra attention Sammy generates during pre-game festivities by using a corked bat affect his teammates pocketbook at the time of salary renewal.
