for some time i've been listening to eveyone talk about alan's method of teaching and being very curious about it, especially knowing that Tony Williams, Vinnie, Terry Lynne, etc. studied with him...
Well, a while back grabbed Ozami Mizuno's (he wrote an article called dawsonisms on MD) book about alan's method, it is a really valuable tool because it has the exercises written out but... it's written in Japanese...
I continued to search for info regarding this so much apraised method.
I've found it:
John Ramsay's book is a very well written book with so many concepts regarding independence and rudimental proficiency, and even better than this, it includes 2 cd's that feature on some tracks Alan explaining the concepts or even playing them...it's like studing with Alan himself.
These were the recordings that John taped during his own lessons...
It's one of the best acquisitions i ever made.

I studied with John for a couple of semesters while at Berklee, and I can only agree to what's been said above...
Plus, John's a great player and a very engaging teacher... If anyone's heading to Berklee and/or Boston I can strongly recommend hooking up with him...

I haven't started on it (seriously) too.
Whenever i'm thinking of starting to study these kind of things i always start a new gig playing something like dance, disco, funk...
It's difficult for me trying to study that kind of language and then play in another kind of reality...
