Had asked you in another thread, but I think you didn't see it.

You mentioned having to watch a lot of German movies for your class. What kind of movies? What titles? (The only ones I've seen have been silents.)

sorry! I didn't come to the board for a while.
We kind of did a 'history of 19th cent germany through film', using the films people made to examine how germany viewed itself, and used film to portray itself during the last century. kind of. so if you consider recent german history, you can imagine how depressing some of those movies were! but very interesting anyway.
I'm going to try to list them in the order we watched them , but i'm sure that won't completely happen, so i'll just get them as best I can. i will list german title followed by english translation. if you can't find a movie under the english i give you i will double check, sometimes they rename them instead of just translating the title.I don't know if you care or not, modern german film does contain lots of nudity and graphic sex, instead of the typical american violence.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, 1919, about a traveling man who controlls a sleepwalker (who hasn't woken in years) and gets the guy to kill people, and with a nice twist at the end. Silent film. surrealistic sets, and such.

Die Blaue Engel/The Blue Angel 1930, starring Marlene Dietrich. a movie about post WWI Germany, in which a highschool teacher falls in love with a traveling singer/show girl who is little better than a whore. He runs away with her and she ruins him. depressing. Well done movie, though I hear the whole point of the film was to get Dietrich in the tight skimpy outfits so the director could drool a lot.

Deutschland, Erwache/Germany, Awake a Nazi propoganda film by Leni Riefenstahl, the propoganda queen. well worth watching in my opinion. the woman knew what she was doing. slightly disturbing for that reason, but worth watching.

Die Wei?e Rose/The White Rose 1982. True story about a group of students in Munich during WWII, an underground group going by the name "The White Rose" who printed and distributed a newsletter in which they tried to combat propoganda and inform the german people of what was really going on under the Nazis. I thought this one was cool, and despite the whole depressing WWII thing, thought it was one of the better movies we watched.

Der Hitlerjunge Salomon/Europa, Europa 1989. Another true WWII story, this one about a Jewish kid whose family had moved to Poland of all places to escape the Nazis... of course Poland is invaded... he is seperated from his family and spends the war just trying to survive, bouncing back and forth from the Russians to the Germans, trying to hide his Jewish identity. Talk about plot twists, if you made up something like this no one would buy it, this kind of weirdness only happens in reality. I've seen this one before, it was actually my third time to see it. Do not let your kids see it. Not that many of these movies are appropriate, but this one has a lot more violence. Very well done. I likes it.

Mephisto a German stage actor during the war who "just wants to be an actor" and believes he can escape dealing with Nazi politics and concentrate on his art, and thinks that art under Hitler can be nonpolitical. ha.

Die Blechtrommel/The Tin Drum 1979. About a boy who protests against the pressures of the world by refusing to grow up. He remains a midgit, but does develop physically. He has a cream that can break glass and he beats a tin drum. this is a good review of the film, gives a much more comprehensible explanation of the plot than I can give. its a very bizarre film.

Die Br?cke/The Bridge 1959. WWII film about a group of german kids who are drafted at the end of the war, trained, and sent to defend a bridge, which turns out to be in their home town. The copy we watched had no subtitles, I don't know why, but if you can't find one with subtitles, I can give you a link to a page about the film which gives basic plot outline. There wasn't a lot of talking, and the main plot line is comprehensible without it.

Die M?rder sind unter uns/ The Murderers are Among Us 1946. East German film, the ending is affected by the Russian occupation, if you watch the movie and want me to explain, I will. Takes place just after WWII. A woman who spent the last part of the war in a concentration camp and survived returns home to her bombed out city, and finds her apartment occupied by a drunkard. He was a doctor in the Nazi army, and drinks to try to forget. They try to get along. He runs into his old commander and things get very interesting. Good movie. A more raw vision since it was filmed during the time it was about.

Die Ehe der Maria Braun/The Marriage of Maria Braun Starts in the middle of WWII, ends in the 50's. It is about Germany after the war as seen through one woman. She marries a soldier while the city is being bombed around them, then he goes to the front. it is about their relationship, sort of. more about her relationships with people, and through her the director's bleak view of post-war germany. some of the other students really liked it. Personally, though it was very well done, it made me want to shoot someone and drink a lot.

Das Schreckliche M?dchen/The Nasty GirlA bad translation of the title, but then people can be stupid. It really is better translated "wretched" or "terrible", nasty tends to have more sexual connotations here, but whatever. A young woman starts investigating the local heros of her town, and begins to realize that the town's war history is not what what its people have represented it be. I liked it.

Die vorlerene Ehre der Katharina Blum/ The lost Honor of K... B..." 1975. A slam at the German media. A woman is blamed for aiding a terrorist, and the police rely heavily on the word of a lying media scumbag for evidence, and he ruins her life.
I liked this one a lot.

Himmel ?ber Berlin/ Wings of Desire 1988. Takes place entirely in Berlin. Absolutely awesome movie. Includes the ancient storyteller Homer, lots of angels, Peter Falk, fabulous story and great cinematography (or I think so). It is the movie of which "City of Angels" was a cheap rip-off. I liked "City of Angels" but the simple Hollywood love story will never compare with this multi-level, intense and in-depth story. *bounces a lot* this movie ROCKS. whether you liked or hated "City of Angels" you should give this one a chance if you can find it.

Happy Birthday T?rke 1992. About a Turkish detective in Germany who gets a case looking for the background behind the disappearance of a woman's husband. Turks are treated a lot like Mexicans are treated in the US, so that's part of the tension of the movie. Our school copy had no subtitles and the movie is cool, but it played merry hell with my concussion. I'm still not sure I caught all the plot twists, but it was fun.

Angst Essen Seele Auf/ Fear Eats the Soul a german woman falls in love with a Moroccan immigrant and they marry. everyone hates immigrants, and they are both treated badly. Not so good for their relationship. eh.

and the last movie we watched was Nowhere in Africa which should be at blockbuster since it won Best Foreign Film this year.

I've seen DR. CALIGARI, NOSFERATU, and METROPOLIS. (Thank goodness for video bargains and Silent Sundays on Turner Classic Movies.)

Didn't see BLUE ANGEL for whatever reason, probably forgot it was Marlene Dietrich week or something. Maybe saw a little bit of it. *shrugs*

I'm pretty sure I've seen one of Riefenstahl's movies, but couldn't say which.

you know, I've only ever seen half of Das Boot. My friend let me borrow it long enough to watch the first half, then took it back, and I never have seen the end. Maybe I should watch it.

I watched Mostly Martha recently, that's a pretty fun movie. Less intellectual and more fun. I also like The Princess and the Warrior, done by the same people as Run Lola Run, very fun. There were other movies on the list for the semester that we did not watch, and I found some interesting movies at a store in Dallas that I watched wich were very good.

A lot of the movies chosen for our class were depressing and "intellectual". They did provide lots of brain food... but man. some of them were so DARK.
