let's talk movies.
why do all of the new movies that come out suck? is it the acting? the stories? the special effects?
why is it that all of the old movies that arent quite as techincally advanced as modern flicks are (generalizing here) better than the latest hollywood blockbusters?
What about independant films? Does the talent and storyline shine through more on these films since they arent as subject to watered down hollywood plots and actors?

I guess it's the plot, and to a certain extent the actors. Most movie producers seem to like to play safe, and what sells already is a safe bet. Movie companies are just businesses, where the product has to be sold and artsy ideas come second in line. Look at all the romantic comedies we've had for instance, as soon as a certain type of movie 'works' everyone else hops on the bandwagon and tries to make something alike to squeeze money out of the concept. (You see the same in the game industry).
And don't forget your perception is colored, most of the crappy movies from the old days have been selected out of the whole showing circuit, leaving only the good ones for you to see and compare to the movies nowadays.
Let's not forget about all the natural event movies that came out...

"Typhoon"
"Earthquake"
blah blah blah.
i mean yea.... I say, there's shit movies, then there's classics.
I agree though, I think people focus way to much on the effects and the storylines are going to shit.
They're like "oooooohhhhh look we made a movie with STUNNING VISUAL EFFECTS"...
i say... 'yea, neato.. cool, just like the last one.... where's the storyline develop in this 5 movie set?'
it's bullshit anymore.... just like society is growing to be.
for some people, it doesn't take much to draw
their attention. they wish to see supernatrual/superhuman
things.... larger than life events and people...
for the others.... theres mcdonalds
Dumb and Dumber is a good movie.
"New Movies" vs. "Old Movies" is actually a rather all-encompassing topic with me (DVD-pirateer wannabe). Late-60's - mid/late-80's is what I consider the GOLDEN AGE of moviemaking.
That era of moviemaking was MUCH more free to explore & experiment & make movies that writer/director/producer teams were proud to have created. It was also "Pre-Code", when movie ratings were MUCH more lax (examples; the original "Planet Of the Apes" , 1968 I believe, was rated G, and got away with showing Charleton Heston & a couple other mens butt-cracks. "Logans Run", 1976, rated PG, was in a psychedelic drug using free-love future that had full-frontal female nudity and think Michael York showed his tush a couple times after the duo had escaped the city.)
The 70's were also a great time for movies because nobody had quite yet caught-on to the demographics of moviegoers. That's when X and XXX movies were advertised & playing in National Chain distribution theatres; "Devil In Miss Jones" (when grindhouse porns were still shot on celluloid & had plot-driven scriptwriting), "Dawn Of the Dead", etc. For myself & current movies, will only go to see on the BIG SCREEN those that have stories that might be interesting (Summer of Sam, Momento, Natural Born Killers (which I saw in a drive-in theatre during a thunderstorm! [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] ), 8mm,...usually crime-related pics), or those that need to be seen BIG for the SFX (Attack of the Clones, The Two Towers, Matrix Reloaded, T3; Rise of the Machines).

Fast & The Furious. Revheads all over came to see that. It worked. so they make a sequel - more money.

The money amounts being thrown around movie studios is ridiculous. People get paid millions of dollars to "star" in a film.
Also the fame these people get is amazing. Why are they so popular? It gives me the shits. Especially shows like ET, who promote celebrity status. What makes them better than me? the ability to act? Bah.

Is it just me or do movies from the seventies seem depressing?Saturday Night Fever had John Travolta playing an ego driven,shallow,looser dancer guy.I believe the movie included some chick getting boned in the back seat of a car while a couple of dudes in the front seat laughed(borderline rape).And also it had the mandatory suicide attempt.I hated that movie,somebody from the disco era want to explain to me what was so great about it?
bah... i've never liked that movie either....
