I missed it!

I missed the July issue of Modern Drummer with the reader's poll results. Who got the Hall of Fame vote and the best all-around vote and all that other good stuff?

Simon Phillips I think? Not sure tho...

MD's Hall of Fame is full of deserving drummers although there are a couple that are there because they died. [img]rolleyes.gif[/img] Simon Phillips turned down band memberships with Judas, Mott and Asia and gigged extensively with The Who and Jeff Beck before he was 25 years old. I'm not trying to stir up any shit but Simon plays every bit as good as Vinnie and Dave and has had more bigtime/big name recording/touring gigs than BOTH OF THEM combined. It's about time he made MD's list.

Thanks to 5/8, I have taken a much closer look at Simon. He's a very different drummer than Vinnie or Dave, but he moves me. I love his, "Gut" level approach to the kit. He also seems to have a great personality--the kinda guy you'ld like to hang with. That does have an impact on the overall "feel" of the guy. Simon reminds me of a high performance race car.

RW - that's what listening to too many polyrhythms/Song X/Power Tools [Bill Frisell-Melvin Gibbs-Ronald Shannon Jackson]'ll do to ya...[oh yeah, or "heavy-metal/punk-industrial"] [img]wink.gif[/img] ...

SP is a fantastic drummer & 1 of my long-time FAVES... but to say he "plays every bit as good as Vinnie and Dave ('not trying to stir up any ___');" well, [& here we go again!], I don't QUITE know about that one ["hyoo done seht a MOUTHHHH-fulllll] [img]wink.gif[/img] ; that's a pretty hefty statement/comparison... [I'd say he's da** close] ...and "has had more bigtime/big name recording/touring gigs than BOTH OF THEM combined"... this may be true, but Vinnie & Dave have recorded on far more artists albums than one might think.... many of them, really big names... & it's said that they've BOTH turned down some pretty BIG name gigs AW... it is documented that SP HAS stated that he freaks out on Vinnie, Weckl, & Virg [& Dennis, perhaps?!] ... having said all that, 5/8, i'll say again that SP is right up there w/ the greats; a phenomenal drummer, 1 of the all-time GREATS [& like you said, much of it b4 he was even out of his 20's], & 1 of the heirs to the crown of chronicled "drumming history/lifetime acheivement/deep, THICK-a** groove" award[s].... the stuff he did w/ Townshend ["Give Blood, & Face to Face" for ex], & his 1st solo CD ['88 - w/ "Protocol, & V-8"], [AWA the 'more recent' stuff w/ Toto] cinched it for me... [img]cool.gif[/img]
PS - cool that he turned down priest, hoople, & Asia, no less; i wasn't prior aware of that....]

Fuse, good to hear from ya. When I saw Simon's list of album credits and artist tours on his website I was stunned: you can scroll and scroll for minutes before you reach the end of it. For every Zappa, Camilo, Sting and Chick Corea on the Weckliuta resume Simon can drop names like Jagger, Townsend, Page, Beck and Jack Bruce. Or Toto or Stanley Clarke or . . .

Did you know that Vinnie once was offered the gig with Jeff Beck until professional commitments allowed Simon to return earlier than previously thought thereby beating Vinnie out of the tour? I stick to my guns: Simon is in the same league with the baddest of the bad, i.e. equal to Weckl & Colaiuta (or any other hotshot on the map). They've all got their 'sthick' (like Simon playing paradiddles so fast they sound like a dentist's drill stuck on high) but I don't hear ANYBODY sending Mrs. Phillips' son home with his butt kicked.

Well I cannot speak for Simon well I guess I can, he has stated for years that Virg does MANY things that he could not even think of doing, even so far to say that Virg technically is the head honcho out there right now and he say's that openly in the presence of Virg, not an insincere statement made out pressure or to make someone feel good. I have seen Simon and seen Virg and Vinnie and I love Simon's playing one of my all-time faves. He is a Big-Time drummer but no IMHO he is no Virg or Vinnie from a technical and creative standpoint. And comparing playing with Jagger and Toto and Townsend to Corea, Sting, Zappa different gigs all the way around for sure. I cannot say that Jagger and Townsend are bigger gigs because they sold more albums and are more well known, does not make the gig any better. My goodness Vinnie has played with so many people on way more diverse gigs that I have lost count. But again Simon is wonderful in his own right.

Digital
