Did the original big wheel come equipped with a manual hand break?
We had this discussion at a party on Saturday night and I was sure that the big wheel didn?t have a hand break. It might have been introduced on a later model but not the original. [of course, like with all my opinions, this was met with resistance] Does anyone know what the first pedal push vehicle was that came with a hand break? [it would help with my argument] I know the green machine had the levers to steer but not a brake.
all help greatly appreciated

thank for the link stace but i am thinking more along the lines of this:

though back in the day the big wheel was made out of plactic which made it easy to bust in two when running into a wall or something.

Memory tells me that the original DID NOT have the hand brake, and that it came on a later version. Though my Big Wheel (circa 1975 or so) DID have the hand brake.
Do you remember the Green Machine? You could do some REALLY killer spin-outs on that bad ride! I didn't have one, but a retarded kid on the street did. He was a mean little SOB and all of our parents made us play with him. They didn't realize that the reason we didn't play with him was because he beat us all up, not because he was retarded. But the only perk to the whole thing (aside from the humor of saying I spent part of my childhood getting beaten up by a retarded kid) was that we could play with the Green Machine. Just couldn't touch his Star Trek Transistor thing.

The picture here:http://www.marxmuseum.com/pages/850629/index.htm
Shows a Big Wheel without the handbrake. But in the ad, you see the handbrakes. But who knows how old the ad is, and if it came from a later model.
I will get to the bottom of this!!! I need one of these for Zach now. My daughter never used hers much, so hopefully my son will when he gets bigger.

My Big Wheel had the handbreak...
I remember cuz thats what makes you do the spins and the cool moves
and once you start doing spins and skids constantly...I remember the wheels become square and are no longer round...So you still ride it and it feels like you're out on a rocky road...LOL!!!

I think that the hand brake was on the Dukes of Hazard model. You could use it to do spinouts. A lotta fun, if I remember right.
