I'm not the type of guy to spend lots of time and bang on everything in a drumshop; I usually pickup my sticks and leave. But I went with one of my students who wanted me to help him choose gear. He was like a kid in a candy shop and since we were the only customers in the store, well...we banged! Here’s some comments on gear I tried:
I usually don’t like rock crashes but I was impressed by the new Sabian Paragon series. Explosive but nice tone and distinctive bell sound. And not overpriced! I’d consider them if I was more into rock. My student got the 16’’, 18’’ and 20'' crashes and the 14’’ hats. I liked the hats a lot, very versatile I think, close to my A custom hats. The ride is another story : 22’’, a HEAVY chunk of metal that barely moves, with zero buildup, zero shimme...I guess it’s perfect for Neil’s fast ride rock patterns ? ? la YYZ & Spirit of radio ? but not my cup of tea.
But my award goes to Sabian's Evolution series (Weckl has tremendous ears for gear) [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] .
On drums, the overall best sounding kit in the store was a Pacific LX (and only 1500 $CAN!). I was really tempted. My student will order one. 2nd, but for a lot more $$ was the Pearl Birch Masters Studio (with beautiful gold plated hardware), I had always said that my next kit would be a Pearl! 3rd was a nice burnt orange Gretsch USA Maple for yet more $$.
And I think I found MY snare : Pearl's Chad Smith signature. Ultrasensitive, it just triggered da funk outta me!!

The Pacific sets sound GREAT! Pearls are great too. I have a mahogany set, just the Session series, but it sounds wonderful. It is just a middle of the line kit but yet it sounds sooooo good. I have played on so many kits and i lucked out. The one i have just seems to have a great sound, better than sets that are WAY more expensive; very surprizing. I have shopped around for a top-of-the-line kit to upgrade to but the sound i get out of the Pearl that i have just is too good to justify spending the money on a new kit. The Pacific sets are very surprizing also. I dig!

The Paragon crashes og a bit heavy for me. but the hi-hat sounds very good.
The Pacfic kits are nice! Ehem, the toms are to cold for me. My well done, DW!! And you can't get any better drums for the price. The hardare aren't so bad as meny folks say.
