www.archive.org
- great source of public domain movies, lots of cool 50's and other stuff, downloadable at relatively usable resolutions! Also archive of the web for viewing obsolete sites... and more!

Just looking at that site (archive.org) How can you play the clips (mpeg files) what do you need? They don't work like normal quicktimes. Does anyone know any freeware progs to convert.

Not sure, they work OK for me... not sure if MPEG 2 ones will play in quicktime by default, mpeg 4 versions work fine in quicktime 6 tho...
Somewhere amongst the FAQs on the site is all the info on playing on the mac... you should probably check there...

also archive.org hosts internet record labels, i know a few guys who got labels up there, simon/h0l of monotonik & nullsleep of 8bitpeoples.
you probably knew that but anyway, http://www.archive.org/audio/netlabels.php
maybe the creation of a small newport noise label would be a good idea? who knows.
That's a nice idea... I've not looked into the archive.org audio stuff before, could be good...
On closer inspection, the archive.org open source audio section seems like the solution to all my MP3 hosting needs!!... none of the bad points of any mp3.con style operation; no ads, free forever, unlimited everything, and allows direct linking, streaming etc... looks great!
Today's useful thing: mixonic.com - on demand CD duplication + printing, you can sell online, looks great! I'll be sticking a cementimental release up there very soon by way of a test to see if it's worthwhile...
