Anyway, I checked out the Ndugu clips and enjoyed them. You can tell they're VERY basic but the
truth is that's where everyone usually needs to be.
I have loved N-Dugu's (glad he corrected me on the pronounciation) [img]wink.gif[/img] playing for many, many, many years. My favorite Ndugu was with George Duke but he had some other great tracks, with JLP, for instance.
He clearly articulates the key points about what he discusses.
You can't go wrong taking that advice. No, sir.
I checked out Dom's videos on open-handed playing. They basically 'open' the door to the idea. I noticed, right away, that he was German on his left side, while more French on his right, in terms of grip. I would recommend that you not play both ways, when you're approaching the kit, whether open or not. However, if you are comfortable playing both ways and can demonstrate equal competence, do what moves you. Perhaps Dom is fluent both ways and I'm speaking out of turn.
Billy has always played French. I do, as well.
I dug his set-up. Very nice kit and sound.
In the future, I hope that he goes into how everything, which is done traditional, can be done matched, as well as how playing open 'opens' the right hand to doing other things and which would not come naturally for the player that crosses. The argument against matched dovetails the argument against playing open.
You want to be solid in your logic so your commitment will not falter.
Perhaps he'll get into how to develop it, more specifically, in the future. It IS a new world and one that has to be discovered, inch by inch.
How about that grin at the end of each of the videos?

From what I know, he's known as an educator, with a positive attitide that people seem to like in clinic.
I am unfamiliar with his recordings.
So, you didn't like the sound of his drums. Well, they didn't sound as good as yours on that recording but have you tried recording drums on video, Dazzler? They usually sound quite different. On sound, everybody has their tastes. As for his, I didn't mind them at all.
As I see it, he was not talking about 'music' in these videos, at least, not on the playing "open" videos. That was all on the physical approach to the kit, which is another subject, don't you think?

I've only heard good things about Ndugu's playing (musically), but in my opinion, she should NOT be teaching technique. Case in point: His double "stroke" roll.

Haven't checked out the Ndugu yet but I had to comment on this Dom guy, just awful! Who the hell is he and what does he do, besides have a horrible, wooden sound on the drums. Personally I don't care how knowledgable he is on the German French and American grips, his playing is so wooden and that shuffle groove he played swung like a statues c*ck!
I believe that he's a well respected educator in the US and that he does clinics all over, but having the best facility in the world and being able to relay that to classes does NOT make you a good player. I just think it's all too 'drummy'. I know I bang on about it but he never once mentions MUSIC. Maybe that's why he teaches and doesn't gig?
Can someone tell me who this guy has played with and what recordings he has done because I found those lessons horrible. And whats with his annoying affected laugh at the end of each clip? Is he on Prozac?

I think you two aren?t beeing very ?kindly? saying all those things about Dom Famularo and Ndugu Chancler.
Maybe you already know and control in a master-level all the material they talk about but I think this cyberlessons can be useful for a lot of people.
As far as the sound...I think it is very OK. ( I admit that if you buy a DVD and you find that sound you may make angry but this is internet and it is free.
I don?t think VIC FIRTH is so stupid, putting this two musicians on the website...

Juan, he was talking about Dom
and he does have the right to say
what he wants. He was clear about
that and he also comes from a real
background in playing the music, as
evidence his big-band samples, which
I think you will like and also show,
in "the walk", that he emphasizes
the contribution of the drummer to
the whole product.
We're all free to express ourselves
and in whatever way. At least, Dazz
can play and when a player talks, I
always lend an ear, even if I don't
agree necessarily with them.
