CG, you seem to think that it's somehow relevant that an entertainment film bested a documentary.

By the way how many theaters did Spidey show on?
Was just over on BoxOfficeMojo.com looking at some of the numbers for Fahrenheit 9/11 and Spiderman 2 and thought it was interesting how they lined up when you look at the per theater revenues instead of the total gross.
Seems that Fahrenheit kicked butt on opening day taking in $41,961 per theater to Spiderman 2?s opening day take which was slightly under 9/11?s at $9,741 per theatre.
Now that probably isn?t the best example due to the very large discrepancy in total theaters for each, 2 to 4152, for 9/11 and Spiderman 2 respectively but opening day is opening day.
It continues to be intriguing when you look at the opening weekend figures. Fahrenheit?s returns for it?s opening weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun) came out to $27,558/theatre while Spidey couldn?t quite swing at the same level with only $21,266/theatre for it?s opening Fri, Sat and Sunday.
Interesting that a mega movie like Spidey which cost $260 million in production and marketing couldn?t hold it?s own with something that only cost $16 million to produce and market.
Another interesting little tidbit. So far Fahrenheit has earned back roughly five times it?s cost and Spidey has recouped just a bit more than half what it cost.
Now it?s not really fair to compare these two head to head like that as they are completely from completely different genres and everyone knows that entertainment flicks always do so much better than lowly documentaries. [img]smile.gif[/img]
I really don't mean to gloat as I'm sure that Spidey 2 will make back it's costs and do well overall but it's just so amazing that Fahrenheit is just so kicking butt!
Pina what you seem to be forgetting though, is that while 9/11 does have a more per theater compared to Spiderman, that is because for Spiderman, anyone could go to any theater and see Spiderman while 9/11 has only a few choice playings, ie more money per theater because of limited showings available in area, so people have to go there instead of say the one down the street from them. If only a select few places are playing it, the screen will be packed far more then say a movie you can see at any movie house.
Quite frankly I think huge releases like Spiderman hurt per theater ticket sales because anywhere you go it is playing it.

Yupper, I know how it skews things. That's why I noted that the opening day figures were so massively different. For the opening weekend figures though I don't think it is as big a factor, true it makes a difference but not as much as before.
The point I was making, besides that F 9/11 is one of the most important movies in recent history, is that Cincygreg was putting so much into the idea that Spidey 2 would "crush" F 9/11 by the numbers. Those who live by the numbers die by the numbers if you will.
I don't think the numbers are really important due to difference in number of theaters and the films being so targetted to a different audience for a completely different purpost. It really becomes an almost apples and oranges situation.

May have been on many more screesn, but it averaged over twice the take per screen.
