Although I don't think my engine pings at 12 degress, I'm just wondering if there is a way we can connect a small led somewhere that would light up whenever the engine pings (ei. whenever the knock sensor kicks in or whatever)....What wire to tap into and where?
I think this is much better than the "listening" method. If you have J&S safeguard, you're just lucky. I think EVENTUALLY I'll get one too http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

RW101 - Here is a device from MSD(Engine Knock Alert - PN #8964).

The price over on carparts.com is $170.87(get 33% off from importhook.com...cost should be just under $135 shipped)

BigKat, thanks for the tip. The unit only show you when ping occurs and nothing to prevent it? I mean if that's all it does, then $13x is a little too much. I would shell out a little more and get the J&S safeguard which retard timing and show you when detonation occus on its dual monitor if I were to spend that much. What I have in mind here is just a simple led tap into some sensor wire ... but I guess it's not possible http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/frown.gif

randomwalk101: the j is about $500 so you'd be spending a LOT more than the $135 for this thing.
Also, I don't see why you couldn't try your idea with the LED...it wouldn't be hard to just tap into the wire at the ECU.

The signal is more complex than just a voltage which can light up an LED. The sensor is actually in effect a microphone and the signal a data stream, which requires computer analysis to look for the correct sound patterns.
