Root Canals- Fear in the heart of the Hawke

'Kin hell...I just had to get a root canal, after cracking a molar while eating Culvers last month (on a "concrete shake", ironically enough...) LOL Actually, the tooth had been broken, and just didn't break all the way 'til then LOL Culvers had nothing to do with it. But anywho...damn, it was painful. I did most of it without painkillers, cuz I hate needles, and it didnt' really hurt 'til they started ramming files into the tooth. Holy crap...never again! I'm just glad I didn't need a mandible canal! OUCH! *rubs antennas together in fear* Anyone else have dental nightmare stories?

I heard they just handed her a bottle of eggnog...when she felt pain, she took a swig, looked the dentist in the eye, and gave him an angry TCHT!! lmao

Hope all is well with you, Hawkey. Am glad it seems as if everything went normally on the surgery. Get better.

I had to have a root canal a few years ago, and I tell you, it was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life! But the pain I was going through before hand was excruciating! So much so that if it was any worse, I would have passed out. I had my Mother-In-Law tell me that she had once had similar tooth pain, and that indeed it was as bad as child birth, just in a different location. Pain can only be so bad before blacking out, and that is where I was at.

But then I had the first step in the root canal done, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Granted, right before the procedure I had a "cold test" done to make sure they found the right tooth. Good Lord, RUN if they ever say they are going to do a "cold test" on your teeth to find a "hot" tooth! I mean it, RUN!!!

But once the novocaine took effect, I swear I saw angels.

Hawke, my buddy hates needles and went his life with no novocaine. He finally had the shot done, and he couldn't believe how foolish he had been! Trust me, the pain without the needle is SO much greater than the pain of the needle, that you will kick yourself into the year 3000 for having never used it before!

i had to have a lot of MAJOR work done on my teeth a couple years ago...we're talking about 3-4 hours in the chair (actual working time, i was there for most of the day!)...

i got some WONDERFUL nitrous oxide (laughing gas for you non chemical speaking folks) little needle in here...little needle there...the dentists' assistant was controlling the flow while helping him, all i had to do was say more (point up) or less(down) and she adjusted it accordingly, man i had more fun there than i had in years! it was so freaking awesome to be able to control going high or low and just "sweeping" across the skies with that stuff.

WHOOOOOHOOOOOOO!

I've assisted with several root canls and I can tell you that all the patients have had novacaine and not one was in pain. The needles they use are so fine and the pain from the needle is nothing compared to what you would feel if you had no novacaine. There are some dentisits who attempt to do work on an infected tooth and that is why you might feel pain because an infected tooth will NOT numb up from novacaine. Sometimes they just dont give the antibiotics enough time to work and they start the rct too soon. Dentistry is the most boring field I have ever worked in UUGGHHH.

My upper wisdom teeth are pushing on the roots of the teeth in front of them, so I shall have some horrible dental story eventually LOL

<font size="3" face="Arial">LOL. It was an "M+M Concrete shake"...no joke. Concrete shake. That's what it's called. Quite good, too. LOL And it turns out that wasn't what broke my tooth, it was just the so-called "last straw". Apparently, my tooth had been broken for quite a while, and just hadn't cracked all the way until I was having Culvers that night. How they could tell that, I have no idea.

Ah, and an update for those who were wondering (or just happened to accidentally click on this topic when trying to go to something that's actually relevant)...my root canal is officially "almost done" as of yesterday. All manner of filing, canaling, and other-medical-jargon junk is supposed to be done. And yeah, 90% of it was without Novocaine. I wanted to keep the cost down, since I'm not insured right now (not for another month...GRRRR stupid job). It actually wasn't that painful, until the metal bracket thing had been on for about half an hour. The filing didn't really hurt after they removed my nerves, except for a few nasty twinges when they went too deep. Finally got to the point where I couldn't stand it, and did have a little novocaine dropped right in the tooth. It helped for the twinges, but since novocaine is localized, it didn't do much at all for the ache from the bracket, which was the worst part. Eh, but whatever...I get a kick out of people's reactions when I tell them I had next to no painkillers. "Are you crazy"? Like ya gotta ask! LOL

I too had to get a root-canal after breaking a tooth on a BBQ Rib. One shot...and it was over...hahaha. I didn't feel a thing...only a push or pinch now and again...but no pain. I'm not afraid of needles...Hell my Thyroid Disease alone has me going to the clinic at least once a month for blood work...so NEEDLES are my friends...hahahaha.
