new releases

anybody heard the new joe locke record w/novak? i heard that novak had done a record w/his father and i think patitucci(not positive on that)

I was fortunate enough to meet Larry Novak (Gary's father) about two years ago. I told him that I was a big fan of Gary's playing. Larry seemed a bit surprised and flattered that I made the father/son connection. (When I asked if he was related to a drummer named Gary Novak, his face lit up and he replied, "Why yes...he's my son" with a real "proud-pop" glow.....very cool!)

Anyways, he told me that he was going to be doing a jazz album with Gary and the Toochmeister "soon," but I never heard anything more of it.

Does anyone have any info on this project? I'd love to get the CD if it's out.

Back in March, Gary told me that the CD with his father is complete but they were waiting to find a place to mix!! He felt it should be out soon!!!!

Some of the other CD's that are out with Gary are:

- A new one with leader Joe Locke "Dear Life." There is one out that was released a year ago with Bob Berg "4 Walls of Freedom." I have the new one on order, hope to see it soon!!!!! ;-)

- John Gregory "Pictures from Home."

- Dave Koz "Saxophonic".....but that's up to you if you like smooth jazz???? Gary said that Dave Koz wasn't even at the studio when he tracked the drums.

Gary is amazing, i saw him last November with an acoustic jazz trio (James Genus on bass and a pianist who's name i forget, excuse me), and Gary literally blew everyone away....
Speaking of new stuff, did anyone get a copy of the new 'Kleutgens & Kotikoski- Cave Men' CD feat. Vinnie and Tav ?? Seems they're repressing copy's because the first batch sold out in no time. I heard the opening track and Vinnie is unbelievable as usual.

I have the Cave Men CD. I like it quite a bit. The first track is indeed a burner.

Are you talking about Steve Tavaglione? Either way, I think he's a hell of a sax player....I wish we could hear more of him.

Yes, I've heard it. It is quite nice. Nice tasty playing on it. Very musical playing by all. Gary is killing, but subtly on it. I elected to not buy it. I bought Clyde Stubblefields and Jim Payne's latest cd's instead. NOT the most sane thing I've done. Clyde's cd is okay. Jim's a bit better. I intend to return and get the Locke cd.
