hello fello HODers,
i've seem to have had this problem escalate through the years and have tried things such as ergonomic furniture, chairs, stretching, but to no avail.
see, i work with computers all day. in fact it's really mouse / hot key intensive. meaning sometimes i have to hold down certain key while manipulating up to three buttons on the mouse at one time, depending on what i have to execute.
compounded w/ drumming once a month, seems to really aggravate it. i'm really concerned, because last night, it felt as though someone was stabbing me on the palm of my hand. so i had to get up at 3 a.m. to ice it. there's a numb yet painful swelling on my wrist like it's been bruised at the same time . i've tried 400 mg of motrin every 4 hours, but that hasn't helped either.
man, not only would it be a bummer to not play drums again, i'm concerned it might threaten my career as a commercial artist.
any insights would be appreciated.

weckl said his hand problems were due to stress in his neck and shoulders. have you tried using a tempurpedic pillow?
-
Any chance you can use the mouse left handed? (at least for tasks other than drawing)
Have you tried a Wacom tablet with the pen yet? I've heard those are great for this kind of problem.
My right wrist cracks a fair amount after using the computer all day as well. While I love computers, they are the absolute devil when it comes to RTS.
Good luck, let us know if you find something that is effective.

Be careful with overdoing ibuprofen -- for some people it is very, very hard on their stomachs (me for instance).
-
Drink lots of water. Don't drink booze.
And try taking up weightlifting, strengthening the wrist might help and it will increase blood flow through the area.
Stretching helps too.

put the Hustler down of course I am just kidding

Did you ever have a doctor check it out? Might be a good idea... could be Caprel Tunnel Syndrome if the pain is in the wrist or palm. Many drummers have this and there is medication / excersizes for it.
Derek, I have the same cracking problem - but in my ankles. Though I have had it happen a couple times in my wrist too. I looked into this before and it seems as though there is not enough (forget the name) lubricating the bones/joints... do you have any info on this?

it's funny that you mention that derek,
i've trained my right hand to use the mouse ( i'm left handed). even more, i've got the company to put in a custom hydraulic tray that moves forwards / backwards, up / down. it holds my wacom tablet, keyboards and mouse. i hardly use the mouse, but sometimes i do, when i need to switch over.
i've been in the interactive industry for little over ten years. and i noticed the stiffness in my hands and wrists the first time i've started using the computer. it just slowllly happened. everytime i went to see a doctor, they almost always prescribe anti-inflammatories. yeeeesh. good ol HMO? i dunno, but it is frustrating. i have to fight just to get an MRI, and i still haven't gotten an MRI yet!
shedder, perhaps it is my shoulders, but i really can't see a connection. i'll have to talk to my doctor and mention that. i mean, i do have stiff neck problems from time to time but i can't see a connection?
anyway, thanks you guys for your thoughts. perhaps someone will have the answer. btw, i read a procedure in MD recently about cold lazer therapy . it's supposed to be non-invasive. has anyone gone through that treatment? any thoughts / experience would be great.
best, da chuch

Oh, and Vinnie said he used to do Acupuncture for his hands/wrist... but from what I recall, he was not a fan of it. Personally I would never let anyone stick anything in my hands or wrist!!!
Or anywhere else for that matter!!!
