Two things:
One I can't hear what he's doing with his feet or what the rest of the band is playing so what follows is a bit of a guess.
Two, he's obviously not what we tend to think of as a groove player, BUT his playing meshes perfectly into blast beat/grind core-speed-black-death-technical-metal.
He's very, very fast and very clean. If he's playing tightly with the band he's probably playing the appropriate musical part, or maybe musical part is the wrong term - how about drum part, for the tune/genre. This genre may not be to your taste, but the guy has speed.
How did Steve Albini once describe jazz? Something about random chromatic noodling....
It's primarily an issue of perspective, I think.
Does anyone here know who he or the band is?

Now b4 anyone gets hysterical, I love traditonal jazz, AWA many other styles/genres...but some more than others [fusion more than trad straight-ahead; & "post-modern bop" over trad SA]...but jazz, blues, & classical are "the roots."

It's not my bag, but if you're going to play fastly, or say speed metal, then play it clean & in time...Vinnie, the Daves, Dennis, Virg, Novak, Kennedy, etc can all play fast, but it's the musicality, time, cleanliness, dynamics, phrasing, attitude, & command that makes it above average & beyond the norm...there's nothing wrong with speed...it is a part of the bag of music, 1 of the many modicums to draw from, as long as musicality & groove are not thwarted at it's expense...speed metal is an aggressive, over the top style, & it's appropo within it's own way...
I will say this for the stuff...when i listen to a lot of pop/rock/rap nowadays, I'm beginning to think I'd rather support the underground metal industry, because at least a lot of them are "honest about it," & the drumming is not wasted at any expense...tight, intense, raw, & passionate...but keep in mind again that it's over the top, & that's waht it is...testosterone [& testosterone-injected estrogen [img]wink.gif[/img] ] at it's most unabashed. The only thing that often turns me off are the screaming vocals & dark messages that accompany SOME of it...but obviously the vox are part of it's allure to many young people, without getting into a larger, big picture societal & philosophical discussion [img]wink.gif[/img] ....

I did not care for it at all, BUT it was right for what the goal of the music called for, so at the end of the day Cool for them. V and Fuse are right it is in many situations sometimes it is just what is hip to us and what is not, sometimes just perception.
I have been a Frank Z. fan for years and let me tell you I tried to get guy's to take the time and listen to Zappa with Vinnie or Bozzio and they would look at me and say WHAT THE HECK is this crap! [img]confused.gif[/img] they just could not take it in for whatever reason, lack of patience, too narrow minded, some of them were musicians some were not so I cannot say it was not the whole "not inclined to musical understanding" just a matter of taste is what it boils down to at times. Even though it would IRK ME!! to no end that they could not enjoy the Greatness of Vinnie, my stubborn attitude going on there [img]wink.gif[/img]
